Unsportsmanlike Behavior?
Agreed, some of us are in a "YOU THINK THIS IS A GAME?!" mentality. I used to have that, then I decided to grow up.
Don't let it bring you down.
I made the mistake of starting a game with a 7day time control, it started on April 2nd and it is still going at move 27. My opponent is a super weak player, I'm up a rook and some pawns.
He sometimes plays a couple of (crappy) moves a day and other times he takes a whole week to make a (crappy) move. I will win this game if it's the last thing I do on this Earth.
I don't want to sound like a smartass but it's annoying that the guy takes 5 days to play a move and it's just a random move with no thought put into it.
Another-Life, nothing you said was a smart-ass remark in my opinion. You simply told it like it is. Thanks for your input. I've been a member here for about 2 months. I thought the maximum length for matches was 3 days. What is this "7 day time control" thing?
If you dislike the speed your opponents take to make moves play a slower time control. Its understandable that in a bad position they will move slower because they need more time to think over there move.
I'm new on this site and for the most part am enjoying my matches. However, I find that if I'm within 1 or 2 moves of a checkmate some of my opponents disappear - for days. Conversely, those in a winning position against me seem to be around 24/7. Have others experienced this? Come on people, don't take these matches so seriously. It's not about accumulating points, it's about friendly competition. None of us will become grandmasters.
Welcome to chess.com.... If you want continue playing chess on this site, getting used to it will go a long way to help...
Good point my fellow Canadian, "Pursuanyspy" but I'm talking about opponents who know they'll be done in a move or two. Of course, if there's still hope to pull out a win, one should do a thorough and timely analysis. When I find myself in a situation in which I know I can't win I immedialely resign, congratulate my opponent and thank him for the match. In other words, I don't delay the inivitable. As to "egoole's" response he answers my initial question which was, "Have others experienced this?" Clearly he implies most of us have or will at some point. I'll get used to it egolle; this is a great site.
DamonevicSmithlov, that's funny
Unfortunately you just have to be patient. I have had q 5 data/move game where the opponent hopelessly ran with his king for weeks and weeks, it actually helped me to try and find the very best move - in a short time control I would have promoted a pawn but I realised in this game it would have taken til 2017 so looked hard for the quick kill..
If I have anyone 1-2 moves from checkmate they can take all the time in the world, the important bit is I have them checkmated ;-)
"DavidPeters2", I think what you say makes a lot of sense.
Hey, thanks brotha "Morphysrevenges"...from Great White North.
And when a female opponent of mine, 3 moves from mate, swept all the pieces off the board with a swish of her hand, I told her that that was very unsportswomanlike behaviour.
I have very seldomly seen bad player that isn't a sore loser. I try to always say good game, and congragulate the other player for having good tactics, and then they'll insult my mother.
Generally i wouldnt just say gg in the middle of a game i might say however something like this has been a great game so far. saying gg in the middle can sound like your saying its over which is very rude
we have to accept that playing a 5, 7, or even 14 day game means just that. Some, in a lost position, will take the full time contro or go on vacation. This may be in the hope that you are eaten by a large purple crocodile or something, before they have to move again. I have been playing in a 5 day tournament that is just about to reach its 4th anniversary. If you hate waiting that long, only opt to play shorter time controlls.
