upper and lower hand
when you attack you should attack directly and without trading unless there is an obstacle then you attack undireclty and break the defences and obstacles through trading the obstacles then you attack the original attack those are the upper hand attack mode (where you don't lose pieces in a trade preparing for the wanted second attack(a second attack in that sense doesn't exist its just one attack that gains pieces)) and the lower hand attack mode (where you lose pieces in a trade preparing for the wanted second attack(the attack where you gain pieces) then you have defence when you defend you either defend the piece and move it somewhere else(no trading here)in upper hand mode or if you are in lower hand mode you can either protect your piece with another piece(the defended piece could be traded here and lost) or if its being attacked with a pawn you can throw your piece to where it will be traded in that sense you shouldn't be afraid of trading
