Using a chess interface to play out a move ahead of time...

I was wandering if I could use an interface like winboard to set up a position in a game I am playing and then play ahead so that I can plan an attack. I won't be using a computer of course....

There is an analysis board supplied with each game you play.... click on "moves" then click on "analysis"... so no it's not illegal. I recommend that you do this as a matter of course.

As long as the interface isn't rigged with an engine (I think Winboard can integrate Crafty, for example), then it should be cool. As the analysis board Ray mentioned is offered through the site, just use that, and no problem.

If you cannot run mental continuations, then I seriously recommend using the analysis board.  No, it is not cheating.

As with other comments i too use the analysis board which i find such a useful tool.

You run the risk of becoming dependent on your crutch, then when you play an OTB game and it's not there you might be in trouble.

As previously stated, try to run mental continuations and variations, but if you cannot, use the analysis board.

Thanks, just checking.

When I first started, I used it; but now I'm not.  The crutch theory makes sense to me.

I agree with you loomis thats why i calculate in my head first and then often check it against the analysis board to make sure i got it right especialy in complex positions. Its worth using and one of the best things about correspondence chess that we can analyise our games while where playing them and even take notes on this which is great help for further improvments......Cool
