i could have lost to a match with a 1200 player using a 2000 engine.

No this never happens. Players don't cheat, olympics don't need "dope testing".
A computer often chooses moves a human would rarely pick so a little evidence is left behind if someone bothers to look close enough.

This is sad. Someone could just really use an engine while playing live and it's unfair and just.. what the point of playing? Does this really happen?
