It makes it a lot easier to internationalize the site and maintain the design elements in the same location and size for everyone. There are tool tips on almost every icon (that isn't a root menu item at least) and that can be give language specific labels without impacting layout.

WHY? What was wrong with having the words for resign, analysis, offer draw, etc? Did someone think having the actual word for each action was too easy to understand so they stuck a bunch of symbols instead and turned V3 into the hot mess it is? ?
