Vacation Abuse

I currently have an opponent that switches to vacation mode after every move.  Is this person abusing the system?  Is there a benefit to this that I am not aware of?

The only advantages your opponent gains are as follows:

1. If he doesn't know when he can get back to the game, he reduces his chance of losing on time.

2. He gets to annoy his opponent i.e. you (if you let him).

As to the abuse issue, if he is complying with the rules then he's not abusing the system, though it may feel like he is, from your perspective. Don't worry, the game will finish at some point, in the meantime, why not start another game as consulation?

I like to use it when I know I'm going to be busy with work for a few days and might not have time to make my moves.

Ray, thanks for the info.  That helps clear things up a bit.

1.  I understand that we all want to reduce the possibility of losing due to time.  My follow up question would be, if this person needs "a vacation" after every move, have they started too many games?

2. It does annoy me a bit I guess.  I guess this may be because I am not fully aware of the reasoning behind the action.

I know the game will end at some point.  Contrary to the way it sounds, I am a patient person.  I just like to understand how everything works.  If I start a 1 move per 3 days game with someone, and they are able to take 4 days every move, something seems wrong.  Maybe it should not be called "vacation".

In regards to starting another game, you are correct.  That is probably the answer.  I just dont like to have too many things going on at once.
