Yes, sometimes this does occur. However, now you should see some tournaments which do not allow the use of vacation time which can dramatically increase the speed of the tournament.
vacation lags again
this problem drives me nuts, too. but to their defense, when they signed up for the tournament nine months ago (for example), and the tournament started about a month or two later, then the first round took a couple months to finish before the second one could start and so on... i'm sure they didn't realize they'd be making you wait so long.
or that so many rounds of tournaments would begin all at the same time.
that said, it would be the responsible or honorable thing to:
- keep track of tournaments or new rounds of when they will likely start so that one can manage the number of total games being played
- withdraw from tournaments that one cannot keep up with any longer before new rounds begin, even if after means one resigns the games
i'm wondering though, if you go to "account" then "online chess settings" where the first question is "max # of games," i wonder if vacation automatically turns on when that number has been reached?

Why when everybody has reached the end of round 3 or 4 is there one person who , lacking just a few moves to finish the last game, decides to go on "vacation?"
So all of us wait and wait and wait on ONE person before we can go on to the final round.
Sigh.
