Vacations To Avoid Losing On Time Is Cheating!

I timed out on a couple of games today - with the piles of end of year homework that have been stressing me, and five hour workdays, the last thing on my mind is to hop on the PC and make my moves.

This is a non-issue. You've got bigger things to worry about if you concern yourself about members having "vacation" time activated from time to time on an online chess site.

So what?

DW_Batty

I used the auto-vacation a few weeks ago. I went turkey hunting with my brother and father, with no internet access, for a 3-day weekend. I had forgotten to turn on vacation mode when I left. Luckily, the auto-vacation turned on so I didn't lose all my games on time. I didn't realize I was such a horrible, selfish individual for doing this. I hope everyone I hurt can accept my sincere appology.

You don't have to make an apology. It's not your fault going in a place with no internet. There is nothing wrong on what you have done. Auto vacation is part of your premium membership.

You should know that the rating points determine how good you are in chess.

I did not know this.

I thought they were points I could use to buy prizes.

Damn, I thought they were Frequent Flyer points

No my friend, what's absurd is the argument that because this site offers the option, then it cannot be unethical. Say what?? Making rules that should not be contested because they're posted on the sign is sick. And I don't mean the good "sick".

Agreed.  It's technically not cheating, but the point is the rule needs revision.  I'm playing in a tourny, for example, where I've seen my opponents online while on vacation. One of them has used multiple vacations in a single game.  There's no excuse for that kind of behavior.  If you can't manage so many games because you don't have the time, you shouldn't be in that many games. That this common courtesy even has to be explained is a sad state of affairs.

It's an abuse of the system. The rule should be modified.

Croat_1993

I think that is the reason why we all have limited time of vacation

Agreed! The practice (NOT A CHESS RULE!) IS UNFAIR AND MUST BE STOPPED A.S.A.P.!

I suppose that this discussion should be transferred to Chess.com STAFF for taking measufes for avoiding ANY ABUSE of "BASIC MENBERS" by those who pay CHESS.COM for privileges!  You can track my opinions on this matter- there was a lot of messages on this issue!

There is neither justification nor reason by any non-paying member to complain against auto vacation that paying members have.

If a non-paying member wants to have the same capability, then by all means become a member.

But a non-paying member just does not have the right to complain against a privilege enjoyed by paying members.

The issue isn't whether free members should have the privilege.  At issue is whether the way "vacation" is applied is as equitable as it should be.  Some of us are simply proposing that, on a site where sportsmanship and courtesy are supposed to be the norm, the rules should be changed to reduce overuse of vaction time.  Or do you believe that by paying a fee you are somehow entitled to be less sportsmanlike or courteous to those lowly free members?

Diet_Coke

My vacation kicked in while I was at a chess tournament.

It would have been quite amusing to lose on time because you were to busy playing chess!

DaveBunn

Everyone is privileged to have a vacation within the same time limit in a year. This is a kind and considerate gesture by chess.com - It's just a matter of when you wish to use it, be it genuine or not.

Once the time limit has expires, there goes your privilege...

Get over it. A lot of times vacation is legit. What people need to understand is that a lot of us actually have a life outside of this site.  One could not have access to a computer for work reasons, VACATION, computer problems, sick, ect...

The argument that vacation is not a chess rule is kind of dumb.

Exactly my thoughts. Sure there will be some who will abuse each and every privilige, but a lot of us don't have that in mind. Some of us may have internet problems, or a family emergency or any other incident where ' oops. I'm, gonna miss the last day to make my move' really would feel so insignificant. In those cases, for premium members, this feature acts as a bonus: "Take care of the important stuff first, we'll pause your games"

As stated in previous threads. My issue is not with the auto vacation function which is a valid perk for paying members and something they should be entitled to.

I also think people need a vacation from chess/chess.com. My issue is with the days of vacation given both to paying and non-paying members. I think it is way too much and slows down games unnecessarily. I also think that vacation is being unable to use a computer, sick, etc as mentioned Checkers4me all of which are valid, but I think it is wrong for people who are on "vacation" to log onto the site and not make moves in their games.

DaveBunn

Andy (aasel), taking me for an example. At one time, I've got more than 90 games in progress. Giving at least 5 - 7 minutes to think of one good move (and maybe spending more time on difficult move), it would be very hard to complete all of the moves at one particular time. And that's why there is a time limit to the number of days for a game and it varies from one day to 14 days.

If we had agreed to the number of days per move, then we have to play by the rule whether we like it or not.

I believes none of us do have all day long for chess. My game of chess are mostly limited to before and after diner. Sometimes, you may not be able to make it as you do have other appointment. During the weekend, usually I need to go shopping and doing other house chores.

dnavarre

why would someone join a tournament, than  go on vacation three time. I don't know if its cheating, but its boring for the others players.

DaveBunn

Next time, due to unavoidable circumstances, it may be your turn...

cmid21

I recently won two tournament games on time against the same person. (same tournament) It was a great game and was dissapointed that it ended in a time-out.  I rather lose/win a great (full) game than win a half game on time, but that is just me.  Some people have lives outside of online chess, and I wish all people had the vacation save.

SaulHudson

You should be allowed to use vacation time whenever and however you want.

But you should NOT be allowed to log onto chess.com while you are apparently on vacation. It should automatically turn off your vacation time when you sign in.
