Values of the pieces

A long time ago, I read in chess by Edward Lasker that de basic value of the pieces is something like:

pawn 1 pts

bishop and knight 3 pts

rook 5 pts

queen 9 pts

King (who attack like a 3 pts piece) is priceless

But I read on that forum that the queen worth 10 pts!!!!

Is that queen worth the pawn?

RyanMK

The generally accepted "value" of the queen is 9 pawns worth, but of course like everything in chess, this can change based on the position.

These pieces are worth $10,000. They are made from 40,000 year old wooly mammoth ivory. Grab a set from House of Staunton. Money mouth

bomtown... I thoguht you were joking!  In reality you slightly under priced the item, I see it is actually Our Everyday Price of $12,999.00.

I did see something about 10% discounts available.

Since you'll have a position with a queen vs 9 pawns only extremely rarely, I'd say the point is moot.

If you are ever in that position there is probably something wrong with your board.

Considering the opponent can only ever have 8 pawns on the board, I'd say rarely is an overstatement.  How about never?

For me extremely rarely includes bughouse chess, incidents with alcohol, etc...

As mentioned, depending on the position, the 9 point queen is why you'll see the masters sometimes sacrifice the queen if they can get both the opponent's rooks.  Technically, they are up a point, or if you consider the 10 point queen, at least equal, and it makes for an interesting game to be sure.

Masters don't use points. They're a beginner crutch.

The 10 point value for the queen comes from modern statistical analysis (although that actually puts it at 9.75 IIRC).
