Veselin Aleksandrov Topalov (pronounced [vɛsɛˈlin toˈpɑlof]; Bulgarian: Веселин Александров Топалов; born 15 March 1975) is a Bulgarian chess grandmaster.

Topalov became the FIDE World Chess Champion by winning the FIDE World Chess Championship 2005. He lost his title in the World Chess Championship 2006 match against Vladimir Kramnik. He won the 2005 Chess Oscar.[1]

In the World Chess Championship 2010, he was the challenger facing world champion Viswanathan Anand, losing the match 6½–5½.

On 28 September 2006, Topalov's manager Silvio Danailov published a press release, casting suspicion on Kramnik's behaviour during the games. The Bulgarian team made a public statement that Kramnik visited his private bathroom (the only place without any audio or video surveillance) unreasonably often, about fifty times per game (a number that FIDE officials later claimed to be exaggerated[9]) and made the most significant decisions in the game in the bathroom.

In 2015, at the Norway Chess 2015 tournament, Topalov won as clear first with 6.5/9. He scored +5-1=3 with wins over Carlsen, Vachier-Lagrave, Aronian, Hammer and Grischuk, with a performance rating of 2946.

Well, now maybe not so much.

He's doing a number on Aronian today. Even during his worst ever tournament he's still a beast. Nobody plays like him. He's still the world's most dangerous attacker.

Damn Aronian, why did you have to lose??? You ruined an amazing streak that we'll probably never get to see again! I hate you!
