What if a GM with a bad drinking problem were to play in a tournament without alcohol allowed anywhere in the host country and went into delirium tremens (the DTs) and started knocking over pieces with his trembling hands? That's a game loser right there...
Vladislav Tkachiev, rated 2669 at the time, was forfeited at a tournament in 2009 after he kept falling asleep at the board... because he was too drunk to stay awake.
His opponent and other players repeated woke him up with a shake of the shoulder. Finally he had to be carried off.

If there was a relation between alcohol and being proficient at chess, Scotland would be bursting at the seams with GM's. Just saying...Hic.

Russia has a major drinking problem, more alchoholics than anywhere else. Even so, Russia has the most gms of any country. How is this possible considering their drinking problem?
