Walker vs Sitter

Well I've just been to my first otb tourney found out that I am a sitter, couple of times I stand up to get a better view of the board is has been a little weird for me because i am so used to 2-D so I haven't played on the board for a long time. I have question though is it impolite to make a move while standing, do you ever do it ?

Mostly sitter, apart from some toilet breaks. When my opponent is thinking for a long time, I walk around a bit.

Especially when he thinks more than fifteen minutes, thinking even longer isn't going to make him find a better move. Opponents often force themselves to come to a decision the moment I sit down again - so in that case I'll keep on walking until he makes a move :-)

In some positions you HAVE TO think more than 15 minutes. When the position is really complex if you think less than that you'll misplay it for sure. Once there was a whole lot of pieces hanging and my intuition was telling me that I was winning for sure. Despite this fact I was worse in most of the lines I was calculating. I decided that I won't get up until I find the winning continuation and after 53 minutes of thought there it was.

Yes, but that is the exception, not the rule. Most of the time people thinking that long just have trouble making up their mind, they're thinking in circles. I like to encourage them.

I sit most of the game, and only get up to go to the toilet. Sometimes I will get up more IF I have a big time advantage or am winning easily... in both those cases I walk around more.

 I would never do that.

Some do consider it impolite and some don't. I think fide has a rule that you must be seated to play your moves, you arent allowed to play your  moves standing. I dont think uscf has any rule concerning this. Personally, I wouldnt care if it was only done once or twice but if my opponent is playing a lot of moves while standing I wouldnt like it and would complain to the arbiter/td that he is "distracting me" which is against the rules...

I'm definitely a walker, I get up after pretty much every move, unless I know he's going to reply very quickly (an obvious recapture, say).

That said, I will think during my opponent's time if the position is wild and needs that thought, or I just want to think something through.

Sometimes I also stand more from my opponent's perspective (without crowding him or anything) so I can have a different viewpoint on the game.

Anyway, basically I'll sit where I think it requires thought, but wander around otherwise.

I have done both, but I'd say that for the most part I'm a walker.  I'm too ADD keyed up to sit still knowing that several titled players are battling just a few tables from me lol.  I *have* to go watch them, even at the expense of my own game.   Embarassed
