Ware Opening

Ware or 1. a4 opening looks risky but too funny to play because your opening the a file early and letting him attack and the center at the same time you can counter attack on his queen side by the b2-b4 and c2-c3-c4.

Let's see an outstanding game of Preston Ware vs James Adams 5th American Chess Congress (1880), Manhattan, New York USA, rd 1, Jan-06. PGN available here: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1255664.

So the game ended up as draw and Adams should have played e5 in the first move making his pieces active. But as we all know sometimes a4 could transpose into a new opening. Why not try to make this move when your just playing for fun? sacrifice is fun and risky opening is heaven.

The Ware opening is a bit pointless, as you may want to play a3 at some point to chase away a piece on b4.

In the Ware Opening I usually commit to damaging the queen side or go into the Crab Variation. I noticed if you leave the Ware pawn there it can become an outpost for the lightsquare bishop.

You can't attack things that aren't weak. Black hasn't weakened his queenside in the Ware Opening

Like Anderssen's 1. a3, it can be used to play reversed openings. peshka.png
