Someone might have just straightened things out before that picture was taken also Alekhine might have just been sleeping. Doctors told him he had 12 months to live and he died 11 months later so there was no reason to assasinate him. Others claim he was A Nazi but no Nazi would have choosen Ruebe Fine as the next world champion. Pictures lie, people lie and history gets distorted. Its an interesting subject but really A waste of time to argue or talk about. Maybe Jamies next topic can be about great chess players that had sex change operations in order to become womans world champion. Not that I care... Its just A thought.
Was Alekhine assassinated?

Very heavy drinker, his liver was failing and there was no cure. Yes it could have been A heart attack. These days when people have A heart attack they can be released from the hospital in A couple days. Its hard to tell. Some people die just because of depression.

Nona Gaprindashvili looked very manly. If she had been able to throw the shotput, the Soviets Sports federation would have put her on anabolic steroids!

Well, she was very nice at youth when she's won the World championship.
And I'd like to see you, Jamie, at the age of 74. To know if you'll look manly or bestially.

I remember when she won Lone Pine, Super strong players there . No I never thought she was once A man and woman do have brilliant minds. Absoluteiy no doubt that Judit Pulgar was the greatest women chess player of all time. Grandmaster at 15 and mother of great kids. I hope she comes back and she has lots of time, I think her kids are old enough now so she may return. ranked #8 in the world once. Fischer was grandmaster also at 15 but no comparison becasuse there were so few Garndamsters in the world when he did it. Its impossible to tell. I.m not sure but I think they both got those titles by winning the worlds junior championship which only the top player under 21 could enter from just one country and they did it at 15 years of age. Round robin of course , If someone could, I would like to see how many World Champions won the world junior champioship first. I,m certain Karpov and Kasparov did it if my memory is correct. Carlsen must have also. Just because you did win it did not mean you were the best in the world under 21 because you were only allowed to win it once. Its just somethings to think about and thats all.

1. If Alekhine choked to death on a piece of meat, why are the chess board and table undisturbed from from the likely thrashing of a person choking?
The design of the chess board looks very similar to my Drueke magnetic set, albeit larger. The squat pieces, their proportions to each other, the circular wear on the black squares... I'd bet money that that board is Drueke's magnetic model of the day. Very little about the design has changed over the years.
Sorry, no Drueke. That's a large Jaques of London In Statu Quo from the late 1800s or early 1900s. The pieces are usually made of ox-bone, but ivory was used for the most expensive sets. One side is left natural and the other stained red. The board is rosewood and holly, traditionally housed in a mahogany case or frame.
You can still find these sets on the eBay, but rarely are they this large. If you do go looking for one, be prepared to shell out some greenbacks.

Interesting thread, but I'd say Alekhine was shot in his ego; nothing else would have killed him. Yeah, I know, there's always a wiseacre around.
I don't like the fact Alekhine made up games in his annotations, but on the other hand, as an artist he wanted games to come out better than in real life, sort of like Woody Allen's play rehearsal near the end of Annie Hall. What makes you bad also makes you good, which is the way of life.
Frankly, I don't think we'll ever definitively know what done him in, but he was not a well man. Booze takes its toll.

My understanding is that
1. It was a pegboard style set, and
2. Luis Lupi staged the photo by adding the set to the picture.

Yes, JamieDelarosa, it was a peg-in style set. If you want to see one that is similar go to my thread Post Your Travel Chess Sets and read Post No. 22. Alekhine's set, or whoever's set it was, is larger and has an area for captured pieces. If the pieces were ivory instead of bone, it was one of the most expensive of Jaques In Statu Quo sets.
Best,
Bob
