Of course he was brilliant. As an adolescent he played a game with a master that was titled the game of the century and he was (at the time) the youngest persont conferred with the GM title.

The brilliant/ idiot binary is obtuse. He was brilliant AND mentally ill. He was impulsive and demanding as demonstrated in the 1972 championship match; he delayed the event by a week when he renegotiated the purse at the last minute, he demanded special privileges like private use of the hotel pool and bowling alley, then he accused stated he could "hear the cameras" and the event was moved for one of the games.

Then there was the persecution complex / delusions such as Sovier conspiracies (some of which have been corroborated) then Zionist conspiracies, and the 20 years "in the wilderness." There is a book, well researched, that psychologically deconstructs Fischer. Fascinating read, but the title escapes me.

Fischer was brilliant at chess and he was brilliant at chess trolling.

        The subject of Fischer is not the only one used to stir things up. You cannot possibly have failed to notice that this and a umber of other subjects keep coming up and keep provoking bitterness and hostility.
