Was Chess really invented in India?

How would they know for sure? Where did the first chicken cross the road? New research says it wasn't Indian. So, I am having my doubt about the origin of chess.

It depends on what you call "chess", and how you define "invented".

Modern chess is derived from the Persian game shatranj, which in turn was derived from the Indian game chaturanga. The Chinese game xiangqi shares the same derivation.

I'm not familiar with any new research that contradicts this.

Thank you. It was first known that the chicken first crossed the road in India. But new findings suggest it wasn't. And you are right, Chess was not founded in India, even though the people from india would boast that it was, even though it wasn't.
