Was Judit Polgar, in her prime, on the same level as Garry Kasparov

She was a top ten player in her prime, beat him at least once that I can remember.

Never in classical, once in rapid i think.

Unlike him, she wasn't allowed to undo moves.

She was a beast, but nobody was as strong as Kasparov when he was in his prime.  While Polgar could be considered an elite and a legendary player compared to other women, she's elite only for her era.  Kasparov was elite among the elites.  There are only a handful of players throughout history who were comparable.  People like Carlsen, Botvinnik, Fischer, Morphy, etc...  Even among these players, Kasparov's strength in his prime probably titled toward the higher end of the spectrum.  When you talk about prodigious strength, he makes prodigies seem weak by comparison.

Hm.

Of the 16 world chess champions, which have been most dominant in their prime?

Polgar was tough, very tough, you can see some games of her which are really awesome.

But Garry was always Garry

Kasparov was a Kampfsau, as we say in German, he didn’t like very much to lose...

Botvinnik? The man who never won a WCC match while champion, and called himself "first among equals?" I don't think so

Carlsen didn´t win his two last WCC matches neither...

"Talent" doesn't matter for us at the bottom of the ladder....it may not even matter for a 2500 GM; entirely attainable if you start early and push yourself to the limit. But for those players rated 2700 and up - the real elites - there is a point at which hard work and perseverance will not get you up to the next level.

If you ask the Polgars which of them had the most talent, they all say Sofia. Judit was wedged between an older sister who was ahead of her in training and a younger sister who had stronger innate abilities....she persevered and became the best of them (while Sofia is a "mere" IM). But Garry Kasparov had all of the work ethic, the backing of the Soviet state, AND that extra touch we call "talent". At the very, very top, forces beyond our understanding sometimes pick a winner from among many objectively worthy candidates.

A top 8 player then is like a patzer today. Let's see her try to make the top 100 today.

is a joke, isn´t it? today players just repeat engine moves like parrots, then start blundering, a today top ten wouln´t last 30 moves vs Morphy. Polgar, Nevzhetminov, Tal...

Never really know how strong Judit could have been, just how strong she was. Keep in mind her highest rating was 2005, she had children in 2004 and 2006. Databases show in 2004 she only played 1 game. From 2004-2006 the total was about 125 games, which was very low compared to her previous activity (1200 games to 2003, 500 since). I think she proved she could be as strong as she chose to be, probably came down to having other priorities in life.

NO.

She only beat Kaspy in blitz or rapid IIRC. In classical tc Kaspy boy rekt her just like he did to others.

fabelhaft

Nowhere near, as all other players that briefly were in the lower parts of the top ten on a couple of rating lists. Kasparov was #1 for 20 years and totally different level compared to Polgar.

An added factor is her gender as it must be completely jumiliating to lose to a girl.

Vera Menchik Club... which World Champions managed to not join, though.

Which world champions have not lost a game to Polgar Judit?

No, but she was very very good. I'm not sure much of anybody was better than Garry in his prime. So that isn't taking much if anything away from her.

Juegas Có migo?

in her prime or now I believe nobody plays the pawn structure as well as Judith both are she does unbelievable things with pawns I think her and anatoly karpov are the two trickiest pawn players I've ever seen on the board

varelse1

I liked Judit, cuz she liked to play the Kings Gambit.

Not many grandmasters will do that.

There's also that game he shoulda lost because of the touched knight. Look up the video.

I remember that one.

People were (jokingly) calling for chess to use instant replays, like they do in football.

I can beat her

didn't watch chess during the 90s

She's extremely far away from Magnus Carlsen.
