Was Menchik worthy of GM?

Had she survived, should she have been made GM in 1950?

I have my doubts.

True - she dominated all other women in a way that the next Women's World Champions - Rudenko, Bykova, Rubtsova - did not do.

But for Rudenko, Grandmaster title existed yet she did not qualify.

The first women to become Grandmasters honestly were Polgar sisters, in 1991. Gaprindashvili was Women's Champion for 16 year - 1962 to 1978 - but only in the last year was she made Grandmaster by special grant. Chiburdanidze was also Grandmaster by special grant, 6 years after becoming Champion.

As for Menchik's record against men: yes, there was Vera Menchik Club. But what was her record like in men's tourneys?

1929 Karlsbad 22/22

1929 Hastings 9/10

1931 Hastings 5-8/10

1932 Hastings 6-8/10

1933 Hastings 8/10

1934 Hastings 8/10

1935 Moscow 20/20

1936 Hastings 9-10/10

1938 Lodz 15/16

So: what happened to the men who finished in the end with her, and did survive to 1950? Were they worthy of GM?

Pulpofeira
