Carissa Yip is coming for you from elementry school Tongue Out  MR... "women have tiny brains and only good for making sandwiches and babies"

The 11-year-old became the youngest female in the United States history to earn the title of chess master. When she beat Gransmaster Alexander Ivanov last fall at the New England Open, Carissa became the youngest female in the world ever to defeat a grandmaster.

She has competed everywhere from Slovenia to the United Arab Emirates. Like the legendary chess prodigy Bobby Fischer, Carissa learned to play at age 6.

When Carissa knows she’s winning, her eyes narrow and a look of glee floods her face. A sideways grin forms. Her opponents don’t always see it coming, but that face symbolizes the end is near. Her focus is always six, eight, 10 moves ahead of her opponent.

“It’s a challenging game and I like that about it,” she says. “I prefer to play with someone who’s actually good … and I also like the pretty pieces.”

March 6 Carissa Yip sits across from Godin and the clock starts. Blitz chess. She waits. She strikes the timer, her plastic wristwatch peeking from under her sleeve. Godin puts his head on his hands and counters. The pint-sized chess master calls his move “cheesy.” At another point, she mutters, “You saw that coming to you beeeeouch man.”

Still, sometimes reactions from the grown-ups she defeats aren’t as mature as they could be. She remembered one of her first tournaments and a particularly unhappy competitor who did not like losing to a 7-year-old girl.

“He threw a temper tantrum,” Carissa says. He shouted that he hated playing against kids.

“You lost to a little girl,” her father recalls thinking to himself. “Why are you yelling at her? You should be ashamed.”

she is known among peers and masters alike as "The Alien" which helps them account for her focus, depth, and pure calculation at the board.

"I just like to win"  Losing, she says, makes her feel "empty".

Carissa has said she wants to be a world champion chess player, a professional golfer, and a policewoman. Her mind flits, finding new interests, as sixth graders do. If a chess game bores her, she gets up and wanders around the table. Her father scolds her for not sitting still.

At a tournament recently she watched a man perform magic tricks and begged him to teach her. She couldn’t bear not understanding. Cry

WYCC? Noice! Laughing

I'm duly impressed. That reminds me, I need to teach my 6 year old son to play.

TheGreatOogieBoogie

Wristwatch!  She's already a little hipster!  Someone thinks she's too cool to tell time with an Iphone like everyone else.

SmyslovFan

Iphones are illegal in tournaments.

Soon, watches will be too!

That is sad if it really happened.  It seems more plausible that he'd enthusiastically shake her hand and compliment her talent though.  Adults only really throw tantrums on television.

“He threw a temper tantrum,” Carissa says. He shouted that he hated playing against kids.

Maybe the guy was mentally disabled?  Still, stuff like that does happen and he should have been more sensitive.

“You lost to a little girl,” her father recalls thinking to himself. “Why are you yelling at her? You should be ashamed.”

Agreed.  It's not her fault he gave her chances to outplay him.

With the Iwatches coming out I wouldn't doubt it.  Too much potential for cheating.

In other (I made up myself) news Magnus Carlsen was caught "cheating" using an Iphone 6 and Stockfish in a match against Anand.  Magnus replied he used "assistance" to give Anand a better chance of beating him and make Anand look like much less of a fool.

"When Carissa knows she’s winning, her eyes narrow and a look of glee floods her face. A sideways grin forms." ........... I bet she can also predict how many moves she needs to win even before the game starts !!.......23 moves wouldn't surprise me.Undecided   Well done Carissa

Talk is cheap Tongue Out lol

lisa_zhang_tok-nice to know you know how to use copy and paste, at least I hope that it, because whoever wrote what was in your op knew nothing about chess. "Her focus is always six, eight, 10 moves ahead of her opponent." yeah....sure it is. That's something only reporters care about! Any 1800 can calculate 15 moves in an endgame-super gm's can calculate 30+ moves in simple postions. Of course it's not totally accurate, but still, they can do it. Reporters and people who don't play chess just don't get that it's essentially impossible to calculate 15 moves in a comlicated middlegame where in the endgame it's required.

WBFISHER

I think Magnus is toast now.

ffs, they're talking about a prodigious 11 year old kid.  Why are you getting on the op's case about it.

Cause it's all a lot of talk. "Magnus can imagine 10 boards in his head at once, it's simply incredible"-he could do 20 easily, plus the Canadian record is 27, almost three times as many. The world record is somewhere are 47. These types of reports mean nothing and reposting one of them seems pointless as everyone inside the chess cirle A. already knows it and B. could probably do most of the stuff mentioned themselves or C. is total garbage. I mean seriously she's not "always 6, 8, 10 moves ahead of her opponent". What does she always play in scholastic tournaments? It's a minor point, but when the source isn't credible neither is the information and neither is the point.

Its shocking how petty those observations are. really! this is a cute little amazing child doing nothing but loving chess. you are acting like she stole your boyfriend.

why care so much what some random reporter said?  you are so angry about it ?

I hope you are like a super spoiled homeschooled fat 13 year old. don't let me down by being an adult. Wink

To me personally, and many of the worlds great chess players, this unimportant kid is one of the most amazing chess minds ever seen. World records don't come easy in chess.  period.

18 months after learning to play chess she was hanging out with Polgar, and her oppinion does count. since she is a Titan in the chess world.

Carissa only learned to play in 2010, just over 4 years later she is a master, who beat a seasoned grandmaster in a tournament.. and she has been beating great players ever since.

"What does she always play in scholastic tournaments? It's a minor point, but when the source isn't credible neither is the information and neither is the point. "

what are you even saying ?

she has outperformed Magnis didn't she ? she was 1 year and 7 months younger than him when she became a titled master... whats your point if she played in scolastic tournaments ? who hasnt ?

maybe she is not just a novel joke .. lets wait and see, she has another 13 years to learn the game before she is Magnus Carlsen's age.

but then again who cares, she is a sweet kid loving chess. if you don't like my post, feel free to cry more. CryCry

If you wanted to just talk about and admire this talented little girl, you could have easily done it without:

a) repeating false and libelous statements about one of the greatest (if not the greatest) British chess player of all time.

b) acting like a child and responding with crass insults when she (rightly so) gets called out on repeating (a).

calumet

you should watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d77nnrX8OrM

btw an exemple doesn't prove/disprove anything at all

kco

I never said I couldn't, you are right. I could have expressed myself in so many different ways. I could have been so sweet and happy like a magic butterfly too. but I didn't want to. did it make you sad ? Laughing
