"So I've played over 1100 games of blitz and rapid"
++ no blitz if you want to improve. Recommended is 15|10. Use all the time allowed.
"What is the best way to make improvement a little faster"
++ Always check your intended move is no blunder before you play it.
Whenever you lose a game, analyse it to learn from your mistake .
"Puzzles?" Puzzles are good warm-up. Get a puzzle rating above the play rating you desire.
"Books?" ++ Books with annotated grandmaster games and rook endgame books are good.
"Play against the computer"
++ Yes sparring against a strong engine is good if you can stomach the losses.
"memorize moves?" ++ Certainly not.
"I would like to start playing tournaments but I would get trounced in the first round."
++ So what? Play and learn from your losses.
Point taken on the longer games. I guess I mainly play blitz because I'm playing on the move alot. At work,in the airport at the restaurant etc.so quick games are what I have the time and attention span for

I see some people here have already given you some valuable tips but I might have a bit more to add.
I've been improving really fast in the last month and here's what's worked for me
- Learn a couple solid openings that are viable even at top levels. (I've learned some basic sicilian variations, Queens Gambit Accepted/Declined, and Working on Vienna.)
- Learn some basic King and Pawn endgames, and when you're alright at those try and learn a couple basic Rook and Pawn Endgames
- Do puzzles, but a word of advice is that I used to do puzzles one move at a time. DON'T. Only make a move in a puzzle if you know exactly what you're going to do after that move. Don't do it one move at a time otherwise you'll never do it in a game, because you'll never see it in a game unless you see the entire sequence. A good candidate list for moves is "Checks, Captures, Attacks" It's from GothamChess.
- Analyze your games after they're done. Don't worry too much about accuracy, but try and figure out Blunders and Missed wins, as those are the most important. Mistakes tend to be moreso positional disadvantages which you'll get a feel for as you play more.
Hope I helped <3
Edit: I realized people might check my profile since I said I've been improving really fast, but to be fair I only got back into chess about 2 weeks ago, and have gained 100 rating points. No I'm not showing off, I'm saying I only recently implemented these tips, and I was also a bit stumped on how to improve when I first joined chess.com in January.

Its an honest assessment. This question is asked all the time, and its always the same type that ask. People that play nothing but speed chess. If all you're doing is moving fast, and not improving. How can you not know why?
