Wayward queen attack. why do people play it. It's bad

I'm not much of a blitz player, but it seems to me that these types of openings are more playable in blitz simply because blitz doesn't lend itself as much to positional play, planning, and so forth.  Just a guess, though.

Everybody is on about how early moving the queen is bad and all, and I don't do it myself for this reason, but often I will get an opponent that finds all the right moves and really gets me in trouble. It's hard to say 'refuted' if you get beaten. Also the online tutorials for 1.e4 d5 2. d5 Qd5. all assume that he will move the queen back after that... Saying only patzers go for checking the king... and then never showing me how to refute it! And I keep getting beaten by those 'patzers'.

If anyone knows a good video about that line that actually shows how to refute the 'patzer moves' I would be much obliged!

I think moves like wayward queen are more effective than they theoretically should be, provided that you are playing against a human. The confident aggression, and the added mental pressure on their opponent of the immediate presence of the queen can gain people consistent victories at a certain level, even if it's only because they distract and use emotion to do so. Such is the nature of playing against a human.

This is what you're hoping for...:

This is a little trap in it:

I often try to do the wayward queen attack on my opponents, sometimes with bishop’s help I fool’s mate my opponents
MarkoHoog

If someone doesn't see it and attacks with it's pawn then you can get their tower and sometimes a few other figures

Wayward Queen Attack is actually not bad if you're a beginner, because it's a solid opening and there's not a lot of theory.

davidkimchi

its fun. 10 percent of the time i take a free rook

Thefonzbonz

This was my first opening lol

Interesting, it's actually what the bot Nelson plays regularly.

haydentakhuentsang

oh well. getting your queen chased is not a good thing.

haydentakhuentsang

This is why I like chasing the opponent's queen around when I play black in the Wayaward queen attack.

Flameus1110

Yeah it just stops working when you get to around 1000 elo and thats when you start calling it a bad opening because everybody knows what to do against it

2 Qh5 may not be the best choice but it leads to almost the same positions every game. Perfect for those that dont want to memorize 100's of 2 Nf3 variations. There are way worse options for white than 2 Qh5.  It still works 1500+ and I have seen an IM crush an NM with it OTB.

It is playable

Honesty, since I have a bad elo, I play the wayward queen because it is unexpected and most noobs no offense don’t know how to defend it

Pros:

  • Fun
  • Extremely easy to learn due to its forcing nature
  • Good for beginners who want easy wins
  • There is a where you win a knight and another where you win 2 center pawns that no one knows about because they are busy calling the opening garbage so you can get some wins with that

Cons:

  • Dubious (not terrible though, -0.3 sf eval)
  • Literally no one will fall for the big traps above 600
  • The sf eval can easily go down to like -1.5 if you arent careful
  • You will get roasted
