Web Camera

How come the web camera option hasn't been added yet?

It's been requested since forever now. Players should have the option to see eachother during a game, making it more serious, and social. I'd like to know the person I play on the other side, knowing its not a bot (even though I know it's not).

Thanks in advance,

Probably because it's open to potential abuse and increased bandwidth that would pass through the servers.

Everyday I say to myself, you know what would make chess great? If I could see some sweaty guy in a dimly lit room sitting very still and staring emotionlessly slightly off camera all in grainy 360p resolution.

And as Martin points out, sometimes they wont even be wearing a shirt! Oh goody.

People who get upset over being told "gg" or offered a rematch are gonna need professional therapy after they see what's possible on live video...

Pulpofeira

As Americans say, "no bueno".

No one really says that
ChessLebaneseSalah

chesscom has too many users to be able to do that. Maybe if it was an option only for Premium, verified and Titled players, but even then who knows if it would work

There is, I dont know have you heard of it but its called going to a local chess club to play a game, quality of cameras are incredible and you get that great feeling getting social, connecting with people.

As in leaving my house?

I would like to think that people that are registered to play serious chess in the intermediate-advance range (1000 and above) would take this serious and not abuse the webcam option.

Also, being online and connecting with people over the web is the 21st centry version of being social. We can connect and make friends online, which is necessary in todays covid climate.

Rating doesn't make you mature. That's more an age thing.

Most people (even GMs) on here are young. Young GM Hikaru spammed draw requests on ICC  to harass his opponents which eventually got him banned. Young GM Firouzja cheated on chess.com and got banned. Kids do dumb stuff regardless of rating.

Jenium

Lol, Hikaru used to do that in OTB tournaments too.

It would save a lot of effort to have a dual camera recording setup built into the website.  It is a pain to keep track of a screen capture and a rear-side camera video without the integration.

The majority of members don't need anything like that.

Gymstar

no plz no

I play chess on the toilet sometimes and I really don't want anyone so see that

GNULinuxforgood

I see the Botez sisters, I can see Levy on a webcam all the time - why the heck can't I see my opponent? Do I have to stream via twitch?

RopemakerStreet

The Botez sisters can't see who they are playing can they, they're just staring at a screen the same as everyone else.

Then there's the fact that minors are on here playing chess, so it's a big no no in case of any weirdo's. Nobody under 18 should be on here anyway, should be a separate site just for that age group. I had one dumb personal message today that said 'EZ win', that's why I disable comments, but this person went to the lengths to send a PM. Juvenile minded people should be restricted. Nobody cares about gg's anyway, you're here to play chess not socialise, if you're here to socialise you have bigger problems in your life. Last thing I want to see if some dopey opponent pointing down the barrel of the camera and laughing after winning, because that's the sort of nonsense you'd get.

AtaChess68
I would definitely like to have visual contact with my opponent. Good chance we will analyse afterwards once in a while. That would be really great.

But I see the point of minors and possible abuse.
