Who is the All-time Worst?

John William Schulten - "one of the biggest losers in chess history" - Andrew Soltis, in his book David vs Goliath - How to Beat a Stronger Player

Apparently he was destroyed by practically every major Romantic era player.

I was beat by a 13 year old who had no idea how to play chess i was older than him.

In 2001, when over 50, I played in the US Open and lost to a kid of about 10 or 11. He was higher rated than me (in the 2000s) and said in an interview with Chess Life Magazine that he really wasn't interested in chess but his dad pushed him into it.

This would be interesting to look up - all the archives are out there on uschess.org today.

GM Ben Finegold often says that worst player in history is N.N. because he lost every game through centuries. But it is not completely true. I saw a game when N.N. Destroyed Fischer. It was in simul (of course) and it was two knights with Ng5 d5 exd5 Nd4

The worst people are the ones that haven’t learned and played the game before

Moreau was the strongest player in Monte Carlo at the time, but an amateur. He was enetred into Monte Carlo 1903 tournament to make number of players even. It's as if a player with 2000 rating was to play against Carlsen, Nakamura, Kramnik, Aronian etc in a tournament today.

Gligoric wrote that there was a player in Hastings in the 70es who at first moves used to push all his pawns one square ahead "So that the pieces have room". Only I can't remember his name.

However, the WORST player ever, IMHO, the one that "makes a prodigious effort to expose his lack of talent in chess" - it's ME.

I agree as regards poor old Colonel Moreau. he probably has the worst tournament result of all time, but that does not make him the worst player by any stretch.

I think the Hastings player Gligoric might have been referring to might have been the late John Crittenden Thompson, who played the Hippo a great deal for the reason you gave. But he flourished back in the 1950s.

Some commentators have rather unkindly dubbed George Hatfield Dingley Gossip as the worst player purporting to master class; coining epithets such as "Grandpatzer" for him.

I suspect that the title of "worst" will be as hard to nail down; and just as subjective; as the title of "best". Good luck to everyone who's trying to figure this out.
