I have noticed that certain chess players on the UK weekend circuit seem to wear the same clothes at every tournament. Is is some weird 'Chess uniform' or just cant be bothered changing their clothing?

Not only cannot be bothered changing but I sense many cannot even be bothered washing. And don't forget the carrier bag.

It's their lucky kit.

It's probably the tweed jacket/tracksuit bottoms/woolly socks/sandals combination which they wore 20 years ago when they once managed to draw with Korchnoi in a simul, it's a kind of talisman.

Haha. I was at Torquay last summer. On the entry it said 'Smart Dress' in the playing hall. My second round opponent had combat shorts on, flip flops and a sweaty beach vest! Tremendous.

Hey. that was me. Were you the guy in the polka-dot bow-tie and pin-stripe suite?

Avatar of Reddersn

Ha - absolutley not!

You're right. I found this picture in my camera:

At least I got the bowtie right. Laughing

It's the hat wearers who get me. Are they "cool" ? covering a bald spot ? or trying to establish a "trademark" appearence ? I've seen a kid doing the hat thing at a couple of tourneys

BTW I wore shorts on a couple of occasions at Torquay, but not combats. I went for a swim in the morning before playing in the afternoon session and it  was the most convenient wear   Laughing Wish the British Championships could be at Torbay every year...

Good on then, I will let you off wearing your shorts at Torquay. I must admit it was beautiful and warm down there. I played in the u120 each morning then did my Triathlon training in the afternoons. I used to swim in the bay in my wetsuit near to the Livermead hotel. I'd then run dowen along the bay and beachside which was lovely. Cycling days were much harder as the roads are jam packed with traffic. But I loved it that much down there I booked an extra 4 days after the tourney ended, much to the fury of my girlfiriend who was at home in Bradford :-)

I played in the Major. I discovered a sandstone cove between Paignton and Torquay that was little visited by holidaymakers. Would have a swim - bus into Torquay eat and then chess. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

reddersn, so do you have different sets of chess clothes? that´s a bit unusual.
