Wei yi is beast but I doubt he'll be word champ before he's 20 years old
Wei Yi Youngest Chinese Champion
I'd be interested to know how old Wei Yi really is. The Chinese have always been a bit sloppy with birthdates of their athletes.
16 on Tuesday.
you missed the word "really" in my post
Nope. You asked how old Wei Yi "really" is; he told you how old he "really" is. Unless you have some evidence to the contrary, you're just making accusations.
He seems to be a couple of years ahead of Magnus' pace as it is, but it's too soon to call him a future WC.
@DamonevicSmithlov:
Well, wherever Wei Yi ends up peaking, he's showing no signs of doing so any time soon. I've seen a lot of comparison between Wei Yi and Karjakin, but honestly I find the whole thing dubious. If you look at his ratings trendline, it mirrors Carlsen much more closely than it does Karjakin: slower growth early on, but more continuous and consistent.
Also, not only is he not likely to peak anytime soon, he's not even likely to hit a temporary plateau yet. Here's a nice article showing why:

At 15 this kid seems destined to become the youngest ever world champion , what do you think ?

He's great.
But Carissa yip maybe still crush him, make him rage quit chess
Many players get to the top only to be found out by super GMs who can play at a strategic level that computer generation can't understand.
That doesn't seem to be the opinion of Ding Liren (right behind Carlsen at Wijk aan Zee 2015 with 8.5/10, but lost on the tiebreaker score) or Yu Yangyi (winner of Qatar Masters 2014). Also, unless you have some particular reason to think Wei Yi uses computers more often than other top chess players do, the same "strategic pitfalls" that apply to him apply to others. Not to mention that the strategic gap between humans and computers is rapidly closing; some might contend that it's already closed.
Check this out folks. Wei Yei just beat Maxim Lagrave. He does seem like a phenom to watch out for to challenge Carlsen!

Yi is too good to be crushed, even by the best computers. However, Yip if she continues improving will have a credible chance of defeating him.
Currently 29th in the world rankings. That means there are 28 players who are better on average. But at 16 there's no doubt he'll be among the elite if not the top spot. That's impossible to predict though because there's no way to know a players peak. Many kids have been superstars as juniors only to kind of get close to the top & then stop improving.
If he played those ahead of him more it would be easier to see where he ranks right now.
