Were the '60's in the '60's ?

We're losing a lot more people today because of that drug. There's an epidemic in Vermont of all places.

Ever hear the Beatles tell of meeting Dylan in '64?  In "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," the lyric goes "It's such a feeling that my love/I can have."  Well, Dylan heard, ".....my love/I get high."  He thought they were all stoners, and came prepared to address the situation.  None of the Beatles knew what Dylan was talking about, but they did after the meeting.  The next Beatles album released?  Rubber Soul.

Lola;  The book is, "Searching For The Sound". It was written by the bass player for The Dead. He had training in classical music. You can find him at Phil Lesh.net   Some tunes I remember are Brokedown Palace; Scarlet Begonnias;  Ripple;  Sugar Magnolia; Friend Of The Devil; and you'll find a ton of bootleg copies of Darkstar. It was their anthem. Its a fairly long jam session. Back then, you went to a concert with a tape recorder. Today they throw you out. they want the $$$$. One album that has a picture of them eating in a diner, has a tune that resembles a mariachi band playing a fast polka.   One more thing about the 60's, or maybe it was the 70's. You had in southern Calif, a disc jockey by the name DR DAMENTO. Any offbeat, stupid, funny, moronic tune that was demented, he would play. It wasn't unusual for insomniacs to get stoned at 3 am, and listen to DR DEMENTO.

A reported 73 million watched the Beatles in their 1964 appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. I Want to Hold your Hand sold 1.5 million copies as soon as released (weirdly their label had not previously made any releases in the US before this - shows how powerful word of mouth was even before the Internet) and they met both Presley and Dillon - the latter controversially switching to electric guitar as a result.

All this when the US was in the immediate aftermath of Kennedy's assassination.

Sgt Pepper's would not be even a twinkle in anyone's eye for a long time.

From the 50th Anniversary of kennedy's assassination, I read the USA went into mourning and didn't come out until the Beatles played on TV 2-3 months later. Maybe that show kicked off the '60's.

Also, I read The Beach Boys wrote Warmth of the Sun (I hear that song alot here on St.Croix....love that one) the nite of the assassination. If this is true, then that's....well....what can I say....

After 9-11, Jay Leno was off for a few days of mourning. And he was very timid when he came back.

winerkleiner

I know Jay Leno, and believe me, you're no Jay Leno....see what the 60's did to me?

Apparently the 60's were rough on you also., lol.

RonaldJosephCote

I was lucky, I had good parents, and 12 Catholic nuns who would kick my ass if I looked at drugs.

winerkleiner

They showed you who were boss, but that's a good thing!

Hey Ghost;  LBJ was John Kennedy's bad side. We went from one extreme to the other. When JFK went about Vietnam, he looked good, sharp, handsome, young, and we were gonna win. When it was droped in LBJ's hand, he was a fat, bald, stuffy, guy from Texas with swager. He use to say, JFK never had to deal with the war. When he was alive, it was Camelot. This country was being led by good clean white Catholics. Television created the global village. Then we had LBJ, and Donald Rumsfeld. Mike Wallace of 60mins fame, accused General Westmoreland of lying about the body count. After years of court battles Mike Wallace backed down, and most people didn't care. They just wanted their son to not go. Hamburger Hill was under LBJ, not JFK. LBJ was also at odds with RFK, Attorney General. We had NATO agreements to help the French. Kent State, and Watergate just re-inforced the notion that, "you can't trust the system man". Throw in some hillbillys, the KKK, Charles Manson, etc.  Here's 2 points you can distinguist. When you went, "Trick or Treating" in the 50's. Your candy was safe. You just ate it on the way home. After 1968, you didn't dare eat it, till it was checked. The other point was in the 50's, if you had mental diseases, you were housed in "hospitals". I don't know the date, but at some time, the Supreme Court said no, and a lot of these places were emptied. There's a famous movie entitled, "Snakepit" about the treatment of the mentally insane.

McNamara had a lot to do with arrogance that led us into Nam, but el BJ didn't help things, either.  If you watched 1964 tonight there was ol' Lyndon pushing the Great Society with one hand and the war with the other.  What great memories; the war, the protests, the riots, the lynchings, the assasinations, and the Ford Mustang (sarcasm meter on high).  But what a choice in '64--"Extremism in defense of liberty is no vice" vs "Wanna see muh scar?"  We were toast.

RonaldJosephCote

That great society is being continued today with, The New World Order.     The 60's--they were the best of times, they were the worst of times.

To My Lovely Dearest Ghostess Lola;  Its a shame we have to meet this way, in the dark alleys of the forums. Some day I'll express my love for you in the sunlight, but in the meantime, I have a point of fact that I can make will absolute certainty that no one can contest. The problem is, that it doesn't fit your timeline. We agree in previous post that, movies, books, TV, art, and music is a reflection of said society. From the begining of time till the mid 70's, drums were acoustic instruments. From the mid 70's to the mid 80's, every thing you heard on the radio was electronic drums. The industry played with that for 10 yrs, running them through synthesisers, amplifiers, all kinds of devises. Finally in the mid 80's, they came to their senses. So having given you this bit of trivia, I hope my love for you last longer than my love for the electronic drum sound. May we meet again in the future, where we can discuss our love for each other over a glass of champagne, and a discussion of beautiful music.

The "60's" are actually from halfway through your sophomore year in college until your first child gets married.
