Apparently there is no dress code at all for this "Presitigious" event. We have one participant routinely showing up dressed up like a circus clown.
Wesley So resigned after 6 moves
"it's interesting that many players seem to blame Akobian more than So in this matter."
Don't shoot the messenger.
Holy crap, is that Aronian on the right? Cool stuff!!
Are you the guy who got banned, and kept creating new accounts?
No, that was tigerprowl1-8, was it the same person?
"I love the fake writing comment ! A pen with no ink works good too"
It would certainly work as in distracting some opponents and earn you some warning sooner or later if you kept doing it for as long as So has written his notes and had many reminders and warnings about it being against the rules, which state that you are not allowed to distract your opponents, and then the Arbiter can warn players or forfeit them.

Nakamura called So's comments on Akobian just wanting a free point "very shameful and disrespectful" and meant that he shouldn't blame others than himself for his own breaking the rules.
I'm sure Var wasn't too disappointed to get a full point against So for free though.
"What if you just took a long time to write down your moves on the scoresheet? That could equally distract your opponent"
Good luck being taken seriously if you complain to an Arbiter about something like that.

Looks like So is enough of a badass to be the next Bobby Fischer.
He already has Nakamura getting all wussy about rules.

No. Just. No.

Haven't you heard that chess is meant to be partly a psychological game? If you start having all kinds of pointless rules about behaviour at the chess board it becomes ludicrous. Chess players are meant to have great concentration and yet the game gets treated like they have the attention span of gnat.

Is there already some bad blood between So and Naka ? I guess their natural rivalry will not permit them to be real friends ... like Fischer and Reshevsky , Karpov and Kasparov ... etc .

I think the argument isn't that it is a distraction, it's the problem of allowing other things than moves to be written on the score sheet (why do they call it a score sheet? Isn't it a move list?)
It's like the kid who brings gum to class, unless he has enough for everyone he shouldn't chew it. Everyone will then want to write their own words of encouragement which could become cryptic to hide moves.

I agree with the rule itself , I just think So's punishment was over the top UNLESS he was told he would be forfeited if he continued .

Instead of writing inspirational messages to himself, So would have been better off writing "Please stop looking at my notes".

Apparently he thought that only taking notes on the actual scoresheet was forbidden , because he was keeping notes on a different piece of paper/scoresheet in the last infraction . Ofcourse he was wrong to think that as no note taking is allowed during the game ... period . There's really no excuse for a top pro to not know the rules and if he isnt clear on them he should have asked the arbiter before the game . I doubt he and Var will remain friends after this incident though .... we shall see.

It seems to me that Wesley So is blaming Akobian for his troubles. Wesley needs to grow up a bit and start taking responsibility for his actions.

That makes sense but what's putting off many people is that other people ( even masters) have said that some IMs and GMs also do almost the exact same thing yet they didn't get punished for it. Of course, Wesley also kept doing it until now because now he knows it can give you a forfeit.
There's that and the argument that finding this a distraction is "silly" when there are so many things more distracting then this.
Because of arguments like those that this event became a controversy.

Blaming him? Nah, it seems more like he's saying that Akobian isn't a nice person.

Where did he state this? I just watched the post game interview (round 10) with Maurice Ashley and I didn't hear So's incident discussed.

How many of them were warned twice to stop it though ? When an arbiter warns you its never good to just ignore them . Also , in big important events like National championships the rules tend to be more strictly enforced than in smaller events . Was So also keeping notes at Tata Steele tourney ?
It wouldn't look good if Varuzhan Akobian, member of the appeals committee, did nothing while he watched So go against the arbiter multiple times.
