Hmm... all the stories seem to conflict. I hope Wesley is able to put all this nonsense behind him soon
Wesley So resigned after 6 moves
This whole affair just looks more and more unpleasant with every new public statement, this is from Wesley So on Facebook, on his mother's interview that was linked earlier in the thread:
"In the last six years I’ve only see you once a year for about a week, I hardly know you either. And you certainly don’t know me to even suggest that I am anyone’s personal zombie. All your statements to Chessdom are sad, ridiculous and completely untrue. You exposed my emails? Should I send out a few of the many you’ve sent me over the years where you call me putang ina mo (kinda funny that) and threaten me with being cut off from the So family forever if I do not do what you want? Photos can lie and those do. I was desperately trying to be nice hoping you and Susan would leave more quickly. I see it was a mistake. Lotis even invited you to come to Minnesota to talk to me there, not here. What was your answer to her? You asked if she was going to pay for it. I am uncomfortable around you. You want me to respect you but you have never respected me. You left me when I was sixteen, telling me to become a man and find my life. Well I have found it, you just don’t like it. For your information it was not the Key family who wanted to go to the media. It was me who pushed them to speak out for me because I was going crazy with anger, after you revealed to us your involvement with Paul Truong (come on, you know you told me right here in my room that he had given you my flight information, arrival time and room number). You insisted that was all it was and you never met him or saw him. Yet right there on Chessdom are pictures of you posing at Webster. Calling your room to check if you had left yet, the operator would not give me the information unless I gave them the name of the person in the room. I tried your name. No. I tried Susan’s name. No. Then I guessed Paul Truong and yup, the operator told me that was the name on the credit card. She even spelled it out for me. That was when I had you banned from the Chess Club because you were lying to me from the moment you said hello. The stress of finding out your betrayal ruined my tournament. Screaming curses at me in the street, grabbing my arms and trying to drag me along with you? Humiliating me in public? Your way of showing love? And you think it strange that I ask people I trust to be with me all the time? I ask the Key family to accompany me to tournaments to help me. It does not isolate me, it protects me. Stop blaming our terrible family relationship on the innocent family that has provided me with help and support. They took me in when I needed someone and have worked hard to guide and nurture me. They take nothing at all from me and you know that. They are always there for me helping me at great inconvenience to their own lives, and instead of thanking them you have maligned and smeared them to make yourself look like a loving, concerned mother. Lotis was always advising me to try and repair my relationship with you and I could never explain why I just can’t. At least now she can see it for herself. So how about my bank account numbers please? You know? My life savings you said were keeping for me when I was a minor? I have already contacted Royal Bank of Canada, and strangely, the bulk of my savings is not there. Want to explain that publicly? And those furious emails I sent you were certainly not written during match times because I wrote them myself, here in my hotel room. The Key family never even saw, or knew about them"

This is sad, and feels like an invasion of Wesley So's privacy.
He lost a game. He accepted the verdict and moved on.
Tournament directors should learn from this episode and find less drastic ways to deal with issues like this in the future. GM So broke the rules repeatedly. But the TD painted himself into a corner and did not show good judgement in deciding the severity of the punishment.

Wow ! All this is indeed sad and tragic ! Its amazing to me that he didnt lose more games than he did with this kind of gut wrenching emotional turmoil going on in his life in the middle of one of his most important events ! He recoverd nicely after the forfeit by winning his 2 remaining games though .

If this a habit of Wesley So, it is interesting that Carlsen never complaint about this; he played So and they drew their game. Akobian was looking for an excuse not to play So and easy way out, arbiter please help me win the game without playing, because So will destroy me in a chess game. It is disgusting akobian could be happy with such a win, I know Carlsen would not like to win this way.

Akobian was the third player in the tournament. While I'm no fan of Akobian, the blame lies only with GM So.

Yea, when Akobian started to find that note taking so incredibly suspicious, they were at move 3 or 4 I think.
GMs know opening theory better than the back of their own hands, what suspicious behaviour could he possibly have suspected at this point in the match ?
Gotta agree with Wesley So on this: Akobian wanted a free point. I also find the penalty for writing non-cheating notes vastly exaggerated, taking 5-10 mins from So's clock should have been sufficient to make him stop disobeying the rules while maintaining the integrity of the tournament.
Same thing goes for forfeiting for just being 1 minute late... same kind of silly imho. Who writes these kinds of rules ?

I'm already on record as saying that Wesley So had nobody to blame but himself, and I also think Akobian did nothing wrong or unethical. However, I will add that I was chuckling to myself listening to Akobian dance around the issue when he was interviewed. I probably would have respected Akobian more if he'd just come right out and flatly stated that he was hoping for a quick point.

What I mean is that Akobian's game was the third time where the arbiter caught him writing his moves. That means that two other GMs had probably already complained to the arbiter! Akobian wasn't the first, he was the third player to complain.
Honestly, if I had seen my opponent writing down comments such as what So was writing, and not writing down variations, I probably would not have reported him. I would have just had a quiet word with him after the game. But Akobian was within his rights to complain.
I think So, despite being in the wrong here, has gained quite a few fans and quite a bit of sympathy as a result of this tournament. Akobian probably didn't gain any fans at all.

How many arbiters were there ? It seems to me there should always be an arbiter watching the games when its only 6 boards to watch . Was it just one arbiter for both the mens and womens sections ? Was there an arbiter for each section ? Did the arbiters have any " helpers " ?
I wonder what this So family issue is
It appears all parties involved have different stories, and as usual none of them match up in any way whatsoever.
Theres no way So is the one posting on his facebook because its just too articulate to be someone who came to america less than a year ago.

That's a bit unusual. The tournament hasn't been rated yet, so I can't look up to see who was officially listed as helpers in the event.
The assistants are rarely mentioned in press briefings. I'll have a list in the next few days when USCF finally rates the event.

Akobian is a traitor SCUM
Not very eloquently stated, but I guess we get the meaning.
"Akobian is a traitor SCUM"
So, you are claiming Akobian was supporting So's actions and then turned on him? That's quite a claim.
"I wonder what this So family issue is

Apparently, his father is the missing piece to this puzzle. He was in some accident, and So trusted him with his money he had in Canada. Now the money is gone. You can read more here http://www.chessdom.com/eleanor-so-wesley-was-very-happy-to-see-us-in-st-louis/
He is involved in someway with a lady named Lotis Key and her family. Perhaps, we will get a movie out of this someday, "Searching for Wesley So".
Just when you thought it was safe to write words of encouragement to yourself, this could happen to you...
"Relax, take your time. The alligator isn't going to bite down. Try farting."
Wesley was not clear on the fact that writing non chess nomenclature on a separate piece of paper was going to forfeit him AND, a different arbiter would've/could've taken, say, 15 minutes off his clock to show him how serious the problem was. Rich strutted his stuff & it's all history, BUT it could've been handled differently and better.
Wesley So thought he was being cute in getting around the rule by writing the notes on a separate sheet of paper. In my mind, this is even more egregious than writing the notes on the scoresheet. He was hiding the notetaking sheet underneath his score sheet, so his opponent couldn't even see what he was writing.
You'd think after years of people telling him that he shouldn't be writing down notes during games, that he'd at least once read FIDE Rule 11.3a.
He was warned twice. I think the arbiter handled the situation in a firm and fair manner.
