What are points in a tournament?

Right beside how many games you have won in a tournament, there is a number of points that you have.  What determines those points?  Why, even if you have won all your games, will you not get first?  If you play perfectly, shouldn't you get first?

Hi

Prophet77

I agree with you Ripley, if you win all your games you are entitled to first. I think they determine the strength of your opponent using a point system? In any case, I feel such measures work best when there is a tie maybe. I remember one of my first tournaments I was getting down won all 7 then waited for my trophy and got second place.  The person that got first loss one however his rating was higher plus he had more points than me and I  assumed that was the reason he got first over me.?

I have no real idea? If you ever play in a chess.com tournament notice on the right of each player that some will have 3 points other 12 points 7 or so.  Especially when you look at 1st 2nd and 3rd place finishers.

I'm also confused, the formula mentioned in the link is not clear enough.
I think the multiplier 'S' could be the reason why players get different points.
It says that 'S' is : "Average rating of all players in the tournament (S)", so, if it's values is not the same for all players, this means players with higher rating get more points. This seems to be counter intuitive.
I'm still searching for the answer if anyone got to it, share please
