What are the best openings and gambits for a 500 Elo player (White or Black)?

For gambits the vienna gambit (played by white) and the englund gambit (played by black) are probably good gambits that you'll get to play commonly and the most solid opening for white I think would be the vienna game, for black the french defense or Sicilian.

Ummm Id say the Bertin Gambit, a lot can go wrong, but if played right, it's a real trump card. Also, the London System.

For white Scotch Opening or you could do the Scotch Gambit if you're feeling risky. The Owen's Defense for black is rare but good, a simpler King's Indian defense. Both of these openings are solid up to 1600 minimum from my experience.
