What are the pieces fighting for?

I was playing chess against someone at my school, and one of my friends asked a very important question. We have all heard that a chess game is like a war, but what the heck are they fighting for? Money? Power? To avoid becoming slaves, or to get slaves? Of course, we will never know for sure but what do you think they are fighting for?

To provide entertainment to others (the chess players), like gladiators.

Truth, justice, and the non-american way. This is pretty clearly the case since it predates Columbus sailing the ocean blue in 1492.

To dissolve an inherently flawed economic system that has enslaved the masses

The real question is who lets their queen go to war?

YES

Social revolution, but no so deeply, as both armies defend a monarchy

The loser would have to watch the Star Wars prequels forever. That's why they try so hard.

The players are at war,  not the pieces.   Captain obvious to the rescue.

The battle is between the Players, not the pieces. The pieces are the weapons that the players use against each other.

Chess is based upon an ancient military strategy game. The question amounts to - what is the purpose of war? There are many intertwined reasons for war: economics, resources, territory, nationalism, ideology, religion, revolution, pre-emption, ... Some may be important to some participants, some to others. The reasons given to to the masses may differ from those conceived by the instigators. If the real world is a guide then each piece has a different set of motivations.
