Hello,

can anyone please name movies about chess or which involve chess ?

(actors playing the part of famous chess players )

Perhaps I can find them on youtube if you are kind enough to supply the titles.

Thanx.

Searching for Bobby Fischer is one.

The Luzhin Defence is worth watching.  It's not a happy movie but well worth seeing.

Ingmar Bergman's Seventh Seal has the knight playing chess with Death. A great, great movie.

A Matter of Life and Death (different title in Britain) is an example of a very good movie with some serious chess content. Just one game played onscreen and just a few moves but Philidor is mentioned as is Alekhine and a collection of his games. The protagonist has died but never arrived in heaven, so he stays on earth. The heavenly conductor tries to lure him into heaven with chess against the greats.

i read the book searching for bobby fischer, but chess is largely incidental, it,s more about pushy parents. as for films all they ever say is check or check mate, ie. rocky 4 or 5?

Hello Ada,

The film of James Bond starts with a game that was played in reality by two grandmasters, of course in the film the bad guy was winning ! The name of the film is "From Russia with love " .

Friendly greetings,

There is one called "Shatraj ke khiladi (the chess players)" by oscar-winning iconic film maker Satyajit Ray. You should be able to find this easily.
