So have I. There are some good online stores that will surprise you with some good chess sets, if you don't have any local stores close by - most of the stuff in the big commercial outlets is meant to keep you coming back, anyway.

Or set out a day, and take a trip to find the best chess store you can find in your country. Take somebody with if you can.

Thanks for the advice. I have actually planned a trip but its a long one tho... But on the bright side its the biggest chess shop in Norway.

WSama

Wow, hopefully you don't get lost in there, hahaha.

Just my advice, but I'd go for the most unusual piece they have, like some local hand crafted chess set. Those are always worth more, and they don't have to be expensive either.

Have fun.

The non-electronic version of the set that is used in the Tata Steel  Chess Tournament (https://www.tatasteelchess.com) you can buy it here: http://www.digitalgametechnology.com/index.php/products/non-electronic-board-pieces

I am shocked, I tell you, shocked.

This is because your posting contradicts some things I have been reading in the news. Since Magnus Carlsen had become the World Chess Champion, they claim that Norway has gone mad for chess, that it has become a nation where the game is very popular, like Georgia or Estonia. So I would have thought finding a good quality chess set from a Norwegian retail source would not be difficult.

Where I live, I can go to a store to purchase a set with pieces in tournament size - of the cheapest plastic kind, and with a roll-up vinyl board. Anything better, I need to use mail-order, or, rather, an online retailer. Even in Norway, that might well be the case, so my first recommendation would be to find a company in Norway that sells chess sets online - I am not familiar with such companies, so I can't directly make a recommendation there. (I have heard some of your country's great singers like Wenche Myrhe and Sissel Kirkjebo, but that does not make me an expert on things Norwegian!)

Norway is part of the European Union, so in addition to Norwegian online retailers, you should have a fairly wide choice. I am familiar with a few British online chess retailers - Jacques of London, Official Staunton, Regency Chess - and they haven't left the EU just yet. I purchased a higher-quality plastic set from the Canadian branch of Regency, and am well satisfied with it.

I can't tell you what set to buy, because of course what you like depends on personal taste.

There is also the company in India - Chess Bazaar - which pays the duty on its shipments, this being included in their low prices. They make wood chess pieces in many popular styles. I had purchased their "GM Blitz" set, as it was a style I liked and it was available at a discounted price.

My preference for a standard wood set would be a walnut board with 2.25" squares and Reykjavik pieces.

Alot of people might think we are a great chess nation with a very active community and ect, but the fact is that there are little activity except the hardcore chess fans. I have personally looked for a chess club and chess shops but i just cant find anything.... The only chess shop i could find that wasn't online is https://www.sjakkbutikken.no/ wich is very very far away from where i live. And concidering that i m only 15 i cant just drive there by myself. So my point is that there is a community but its not that active as people might think.  But you gave me alot of advice and things to check out tho happy.png I will ofc check out the Chess Bazaar company and their products (Thanks for suggesting it). It was definitely a learnful read happy.png Thanks!

I thought there should be a lot going on in Trondheim, it´s a rather big town (in Norway). It seems to be a little bigger then our capital, Reykjavik, and there´s a lot going on in Reykjavik and surroundings. We had a real chess shop once, but it closed many years ago. We can buy some chess stuff in a games shop, but most of my sets i´ve bought used or through the internet. Most of my chess books, i buy online. Not much available in Iceland :-(

As far as i know, Norway is not part of the European union.
