What color hijab did Alexandra Kosteniuk wear today?

The media still think chess players are clever. I suppose it's better than "Weirdos! The weirdest women you're ever going to meet!"

A good video on the subject

In what way is this video good? I stopped watching it after he introduced the players as: "Geniuses! The smartest women you're ever going to meet!"

That's just a load of rubbish isn't it?

what? you saying i shouldn't be forming opinions about this serious matter from youtube videos?

but everything i know i have learnt it from youtube videos and the comments.

The OP asked about hijab colour.  Why is it an issue?  Surely people can wear whatever they want can't they? Or do we introduce uniforms?

They can, but not if they wish to compete in the Womans World Championship this year

...and watching that vid; it's rabid!!  Maybe we should examine the role of Christianity and white supremacists dressed in black mowing down schoolchildren regarding terrorism in the US.  I think we'll see that they've more activity than Islamic terrorists.  Why don't we see a balanced view about what the fundamentalist Christians are doing to the Moslem world?  And what has someone's head-dress got to do with anything?

Cheers for that, I hadn't realised the relevance, especially after watching the vid!

I think hijabs, fashion wise, are really pretty. And like someone else mentioned, they're no different than the head coverings that nuns wear. And yet just the very idea of a hijab is somehow oppressive and offensive. I could see why you might have a problem with it being forced on someone. But amish communities "force" their traditions on visitors. And you have the choice not to go there. Would anyone care if the players had to wear sombreros? No. They would say it's ridiculous and silly but they would get over it.

If a female wishes to set foot in a catholic cathedral in Spain then being covered is demanded by the bouncer on the door, plus the fee of course :-)  If I set foot in a church, which isn't very often, I'm expected to remove my hat.  Maybe we should start a thread on clothing that clergymen prefer :-)  Now now folks, careful :-)

I am a non practical Muslim, and it's disgusting, Forcing non muslim women to wear scarf "Hijab" , and it's nothing to do with Islam, Hijab itself is a matter of issue among muslims, some say women should wera it, some say no, but what is sure is that nobody can force a non muslim woman to wear it! I don't know why those players accepted this, I think they shouldn't. ,If Iran want to held the Championship there, they should show respect and hospitality not to force players to be dressed like their women.

Finally, Burka or Niqab which hide the face is also not from Islam, they force women to wear it in Saudi arabia only, others who are influenced by the Wahabism are also wearing it, but they are a minority of muslims, so women wearing hijab represent 40 to 55% of muslim women, women wearing niqab represent 1-2% of muslim women .

I've been inside some of the biggest and oldest cathedrals in the world and I have never covered my head.

I think it's extremely offensive that top chessplayers are required to wear Islamic garb if they want to pursue their careers. If their hijab isn't sufficient or their clothing is too flashy somehow they can literally be arrested by the Islamic morality police. If they ride a bicycle during their stay they can be arrested, and so on.

FIDE never should have agreed to hold the championship in Iran.

There were a lot of apologists for the Nazis in the 1930s and they sounded a lot like you guys.

That is completely false.

Firstplay

Well it must have changed since the last time I was there, or rather the last time I visted a cathedral.  Our girlfriends were provided with a wrap around sort of skirt and we had to pay the bouncer to get in.

Firstplay

I think it was Cordoba if I remember correctly.  I don't visit many cathedrals.  This one was spectacular as it had been converted from a Mosque, a building of absolute beauty.  I don't know whether they charged money to get in when it was a Mosque when the Moors ruled and developed that country now known as Spain.

But that's like saying a habit has nothing to do with Christianity. It does and it doesn't. It's just a religious symbol. Just because it's not worn by all doesn't mean it has nothing to do with the religion as a whole.

And I think Westerners are too blinded by our own customs. Iran is a country ruled by religion. So their laws represent that. Pretty much every country you go to, you're expected to follow their customs and laws. People coming to the US and Canada have to follow our customs. And the hijab is just a sign of modesty. If some other country thinks it's oppressive to wear clothes other than undergarments would anyone think it's wrong for the FIDE to hold the championship in the US and force everyone to be fully clothed? Some of you need to stop thinking of things in terms of how it relates to you, your customs, and what you believe. There is nothing right or wrong about implementing a dress code.

thegreat_patzer

ok.  I have an idea lets have an argument about whether female western chessplayers should be forced to wear a hijab.

surely THAT hasn't been done before.

and surely comparisons to nazism, hasn't been ever said either!? its so original.

so perhaps no one has ever just cordially said.  "whats the point of arguing about it- Its FIDE!"?

and since we're stumbling onto original, thought provoking discussions of the day. maybe we should make this thread about whether women should have their own Titles!  that Would be a novel-never-happened-before discussion on chess.com.

surely All the world would be listening; and FIDE itself what set policy depending on what is said....

38 years now of tyranny, oppression, and shocking human rights violations since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in Iran.
Tens of thousands of Iranian women have been murdered by that fascist state!

And you're going to just blithely talk about "customs to be respected"?

thegreat_patzer

perhaps we should form a petition and Write to FIDE about this horrible injustice.   surely they would put a stop to this offending tournament. credit everybodies money and join the whole world at condemning iran for its shocking human rights violations.

and then then when it did that.  the people of iran would surely reject their government- tyranny would fail!

and this, but you cowards are too weak to speak up!

you have only yourself to blame for the horrible injustices of the world....
