What determines skill level?

I'm trying to understand how the rating system works, if I choose to play intermediate will I have a different rating than if I played as beginner or advanced? Or does our rating remain consistent regardless of the skill level we choose to play at?

The level you choose will give you an initial rating

And as you progress it will grow

@immaculate slayer, I usually play intermediate (700ish)on this account, so if I choose advanced will I be given a higher rating just because I choose advanced? 

Yes, but if you choose an initial rating level that is higher than your true playing strength, then you'll lose a lot of your games, which will drop your rating down toward its natural level.
