What do you do when your game is won...

But your opponent doggedly insists on playing on, as if to test you, even when you're far ahead in material. Sometimes I don't know if I should simply go for the quickest mate, drag the game out more myself, or flame the person.

Here's an example game in which I decided to promote 4 pawns to knights instead of just ending the game quickly:

Please don't beat this dead horse. It has been talked about to death. Just win somehow!

On a lighter subject: Waffles, anyone? Pancakes?

Side of bacon?

looked like good endgame practice.  no way i could have mated, i am sure i owuld have stalemated.

If you're going to be that unsportsmanlike I would have dragged it out as long as possible.

Candy_Dreams

Nice i also did that once (mate by 4 knights) haha

orangehonda

I pretty much play for mate as soon as possible.

I send some good ole boys round to see em...

I mate them the slowest way possible. It avoids any stalemate possibility and if my opponent doesn't like how long it takes he could simply resign.

if you want to practice winning won games. I suggest you try chessmaster 11 it never resigns.

Xhorxh_D

take a chillaxitive it's just a game no need for overkill

Your opponent was only about 1000 rated, so do not worry, simply mate him in a swift, easy and normal way.

Sometimes, at that level, players do have difficulties converting such positions and mating their opponents. As long as this is the case, it is fine and logical for him to play on, because the game still looks interesting to him.

As soon as your opponent will have played enough games in which his opponents (of some certain playing strength) have been able to mate him without problems in such positions, he will start resigning these games (against opponents of that strength) earlier because playing on will lose its point.

Nice way of rubbing your opponents nose in you supremacy. Personally, I just queen and get a simple win but if I want to make them suffer, I suggest getting to a position of mate in one and mating them on the last second of the game

Baddbishop

I say just finish the game as quick as possible.

Offer a draw to save time and learn even more from your next game. :)

If you want the game to be over and your opponent does not resign, the answer is quite obvious:

Play for the quickest mate!

Even GMs mess around (although this was a computer): http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1480850

EDIT: Messing around while making statements like, "But your opponent doggedly insists on playing on, as if to test you, even when you're far ahead in material. Sometimes I don't know if I should simply go for the quickest mate, drag the game out more myself, or flame the person" : -5

I'd consider designing a sequence where promotion also automatically mated. Of course, I'd never do it in actual reality.

Good point. It's hypocritical to complain of one's opponent prolonging the game, then turning around and doing the same thing yourself.
