What do you HATE about chess ratings?

Curious.

I wouldn't call it hate. But i find it so crippling how some put so much emphasis/obsession in a rating. I can relate because I used to be guilty of the same thing. Its just a number.

At OTB tournaments it is sometimes annoying that the higher rated players always have an “easy” first game because they are playing a lower rated opponent and the lower rated players can basically expect a loss for their first game.

I always view that as a learning experience.

If the first two rounds use accelerated pairings (round one 1st quarter vs 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter vs 4th quarter - round two top half 0-1 vs bottom half 1-0) the differences are less and the 3rd quarter is also paired down in round one.

Tournaments with multiple rating based sections also have less of a rating difference between the players.

While unrelated to rating itself, I hate cheaters who use stockfish to farm elo.

When chessdotcom alters them significantly because of perceived inflation/deflation.
