tell them you're better at origami.
What do you say when people ask how good at chess you are ?

I usually say, "Compared to the school, I am pretty much the best, or one of the best at the least. Everyone in this school sucks at chess. In chess.com, I am one of the worst." (What is up with losing all sense of logic when someone plays chess?)

Yeah, steward, everything is relative.
I went from being the three-time champion of my school and state scholastic runner-up to being about 15th in my city club.
I eventually won 10 city championships, but was about 25th in the state overall. I finally won the State Senior Championship last year, but I was seeded around 10th. I'm not likely to repeat that title.
Everything is relative. The better you get at chess, the more you know how badly you play.

bluepear, a few months ago your Blitz Rating was 218 - now it is 1974. No, you're not that good at chess - but your Engine is.

I say "I'm just OK". Then I get into my gold-plated flying car with my 5 beautiful wives and 10 even more beautiful concubines and fly off, with power metal riffs blasting from the speakers. Because you see, actions speak louder than words.

I usually answer. "I'm great at chess"
and then they think I'm just a casual guy who barely knows the rules.

"I've beaten people who have beaten Bobby Fischer."
Me too, but it was at ping pong.
If you are a kid (well, you're not), below 600 is bad. Above 600 is good. If you're and adult (you should be), below 1200 is bad. Above 1200 is good.
Like a 100 rated player vs. Stockfish it will be a bit like this:
Usually I'm moreon than off.
Sounds like a play upun words.
