I usually say, "Compared to the school, I am pretty much the best, or one of the best at the least. Everyone in this school sucks at chess. In chess.com, I am one of the worst." (What is up with losing all sense of logic when someone plays chess?)

Yeah, steward, everything is relative.

I went from being the three-time champion of my school and state scholastic runner-up to being about 15th in my city club.

I eventually won 10 city championships, but was about 25th in the state overall. I finally won the State Senior Championship last year, but I was seeded around 10th. I'm not likely to repeat that title.

Everything is relative. The better you get at chess, the more you know how badly you play.

XD thx for the encouragment

Easy. If it's a casual player or regular person, if you're 1200 or above you can say "pretty decent actually. I can handle myself." And you'd be telling the truth. If it's a rated tournament player you can say "not bad but a ways to go."
AussieMatey

bluepear, a few months ago your Blitz Rating was 218 - now it is 1974. No, you're not that good at chess - but your Engine is.

I respond "I know what en passant is." It usually shuts them up.

Barry_Helafonte2

just lie and say you are a GM

nobody is going to check

If someone asked me I would say that I'm far from a strong player but equally far from a weak player

I say "I'm just OK". Then I get into my gold-plated flying car with my 5 beautiful wives and 10 even more beautiful concubines and fly off, with power metal riffs blasting from the speakers. Because you see, actions speak louder than words.

My rating hasn't caught up to my playing strength.
LM_player

I usually answer. "I'm great at chess"

and then they think I'm just a casual guy who barely knows the rules.

Me too, but it was at ping pong.

If you are a kid (well, you're not), below 600 is bad. Above 600 is good. If you're and adult (you should be), below 1200 is bad. Above 1200 is good.

Like a 100 rated player vs. Stockfish it will be a bit like this:

I say most of my opponents would give me a rating of "uneven."
