I don't use this opening often
The Scandi ( aka the John Bartholomew pet opening )
. I've never played it but find it fun to play against
It is a strong opening for black. The one who plays white is often to passive, and if not the chances are even.
I could sum it up in one sentence - Black attempts to ruin the game on board one
You are not a fan? HAHA
Its an irritating opening for the main reason that it branches very rapidly and black can cheese it by memorising very forceful moves that can lead to undeserved wins - white cant just apply good principals to it and get an ok position, you either have to dedicate hours to counter study (on ONE uncommon opening, so only real freaks have that sort of time on their hands) or just have to get an inferior position early on and then hope that black is the talentless sort who cant play beyond their theory and be able to overturn them in the middlegame.
Alluding to what blueemu said I think it is the Caro Kann with a few wasted queen moves thrown in just for the heck of it, just so black can live life on the edge & give white extra moves.

There isn't as much difference in tempo as you might think. Remember that in the main line Caro-Kann Black loses a tempo right away... White's e-Pawn moves once (e2-e4) and then disappears, while Black's d-Pawn moves twice (d7-d5 xe4) and then disappears. Those moves (one for White, two for Black) vanish when the Pawns are captured, so by move 4 Black has already lost a whole move.
Whereas in the Scandinavian it's WHITE who loses a whole move right away... Black's d-Pawn moves once d7-d5 and then disappears (taking one move with it) while White's e-Pawn moves TWICE e2-e4xd5 and then disappears (taking TWO moves with it). This goes a long way toward leveling the playing field between the two openings.
So there isn't as much tempo difference between the Caro-Kann and the Scandinavian as you might think.
Personally I am not a big fan; either black equalizes or white is better. However it is almost never the case that black is better. Nevertheless, I decided to try it out for the sake of fun and I went for a rather rare variation as well! Furthermore, I felt as I live in Norway I should try and play it.
