Received wisdom says to look at all checks, captures and threats.
Of those "threats" is a bit imprecise. But it gives some sort of idea of what is required.
I tend also routinely to ask myself which squares my opponent's latest move strengthens and which it weakens (particularly if it is a pawn move) plus I ask myself what my opponent's intention may be by his or her move - especially if the move surprised me.
