What do you think about your own rating?

I've played over 800 games now on chess.com and I think my rating (1854)  is probably acccurate.

clbcrosby

I think the more games you've played the more accurate your rating becomes, especially if you always play against players who are rated simularly to you. I want my rating to be in the ~1500+ range. My current rating is 1136 (5 total games played), but I feel that my playing strength is probably ~1200-1300.

reflaxion

I'm overrated.  I'm not a mid-1700s player.  Small sample size in my case, and unfortunately, I can't adjust because my girlfriend gets pissed when I play chess instead of being with her.

Maradonna

I am stuck between the 1500-1550 bracket. Now and again I escape it but it sooks me back in.

I think that there is no way Jose, that I'm an actual 1500 player. If I entered an OTB tourney with other real 1500's I'd be beaten so badly my mother wouldn't recognise me.

RyanMK

I think I'm a little underrated, by maybe 20-30 points, but it's close enough.

SirChris

Rating means little to me. It is frustrating though to dominate 85% of the game with opponents much higher rated then me and then lose because of my terrible endgame skills.

ExigentO

I think the end game is what separates the better players from the lower players.  Its whoever comes up with the better tactics and plays in the end.  That's just my opinion though.

SirChris

Absolutely.

It's something I have to work on. My opening game is pretty solid ( well, considering the fact I only feel comfortable with one opening ) but it seems that every game with a higher rated opponent, I never fail to make a blunder in the endgame.

Ellbert

My rating does not tell anyone who I am as a person.

Sometimes I am the better player, sometimes not.

mpetten

Right now I think I'm where I belong. I'm still learning at it fluctuates quite a bit but eventually I'll improve and it'll stabilize, preferably higher than it is right now.

PeaceMakerZero

I'm hovering in the mid-to-high 1800s right now, but I see myself more in the 1750-1800 range...

On any server, Internet ratings are usually a bit inflated compared to official OTB organizations.  Back when I was playing in tournaments a lot (8-10 years ago), my USCF rating fluctated around 1650-1750; my ICC/FICS/WCN ratings were more like 1800-2000.  /shrug.

Currently I'm around 1900 in Online Chess here.  That seems about right; I wouldn't be surprised to get up to 2000-ish.  As a relatively new member, it took me about 25 games or so to get to the "right" strength, although that number will depend heavily on the level of your opposition.

excalibur8

My rating's okay, but my playing is crap; pardon the expression.

exigentsky

I'm underrated by a million points. Well, I only just started on this site so I can hope. Tongue out

DrPhil

I think it's quite easy to get overrated (or underrated) due to the fact that the chess.com ratings are rather volatile; loosing 2 games to opponents a bit below your own strength can easily cost you anywhere between 50 and 100 points. With tournaments using brackets that are only 200 points wide, it isn't hard to get in the 'wrong' bracket.

On the other hand, making the brackets wider wouldn't do much good either, as a rating difference of 200 already is very noticeable. I'd judge myself as a 1600er, and games with those below 1500 are usually won with ease, while I've yet to beat anyone above 1700.

In all, i think the issue isn't so much under- or overrating per se, but the ease by which it can happen due to the high RD that's used.

stwils

They gave me a 1250 or so rating when I started playing. Since then I have lost three games, two of the unrated, and won one (due to my opponent's travels.)

I can not guess my rating. But it is not anywhere NEAR 1200.

Will keep playing here, and maybe someday I'll know. I think it is helpful to know where you really are even if the truth hurts. At least then you can begin to crawl upward.

PS. What is the best way for me to know my rating? Play Chessmaster without using the "hints" or "blunders" button and see what it says?  I played some character rated about 400 and used the "hints and blunders" to help me win. That does not tell me my true rating.

Seriosity

The tournament started, and though it is too early to tell, I think I'm going to struggle. I just realized in my year+ at chess.com I think I have played the Ruy Lopez but three times. Nevertheless, it should be fun.

direwolfe

I always put out seeks for players rated the same as me or higher, rounded down to the nearest hundred (so if I'm rated 1646 I'd look for a game against someone rated >1600). This causes weird yo-yo effects on my rating over time.

My advice would be to look forward to what you might learn from players ranked higher than you and don't worry about a number that supposedly reflects you chess skill.  If you drop down from playing higher ranked players you'll just end up where you should be (approx.)
