however OTB games gives one a sense of accomplishment in putting a whole, consistent game together against negative forces ( your opponent ). to be successful ( in the above criterion, regardless of result ) is a good feeling of triumph and relief. Keep playing. If you don't get those feelings, then perhaps your chess game needs to improve before you venture into the OTB tournament realm again.

but yes:
- highly addictive.. I've seen 2 people who had their lives seriously negatively impacted by their chess obsession.
- some people struggle with separating their IQ from the game. They feel chess measures their intelligence and there isn't much that is more insulting than have your intelligence attacked
- weird fascinations with ratings.
chess is awesome. but it has its negatives for sure.
