When the hallucinations ended and Jack woke up, it was already night. He did not betray their importance, and found this experience rather strange, despite the fact that he had been thinking about it throughout the time after which he woke up.
It was cold at the top of the mountain, and Jack felt that he had a cold, but there was an amazing view from it, He saw the flickering lights of the city and a field covered in darkness. It was raining lightly under the clouds, and Jack got a little wet. Joe's chemical plant was on the other side, and he did not even pay attention to it, despite the fact that it was the brightest thing in the vicinity of the mountain.
From the top of the mountain, he could also see all the churches with their high pews and white furniture, as children gathered in huge cemeteries throughout the city, their coffins bore their names. He thought to himself that his time in the city was good, his new friends were polite, and although he developed a strange obsession with the city, he really couldn't keep most of his thoughts in line with reality. Jack sighed and folded his arms over his chest.
For the first time in several days, he thought nothing. He no longer had a grand plan and just wanted to go, breathe, relax until 5am. He understood only one thing - he must return to his home state, and only after that look for David's grave. He was sure that his mother was waiting for him. Jack looked like hell. He hasn't eaten for six days. He knew his parents would never allow him to stay in a foreign city for more than three days, let alone stay that long. But the world seemed to be coming to an end. He decided that it was pointless to look for a grave when he did not know where to look for it.
It's time to go home.
Coming down from the mountain, Jack, trying to build a picture of reality, stood next to the highway and began to wait for any car driving towards the city.
Then, as soon as he heard a car passing by him, he jumped onto the road and ran down the highway.
- Stop the car! - Jack shouted, but his voice broke on the second word.
The car drove away and its driver probably didn't even notice him.
Having determined that there would be no more cars, Jack walked along the night road.
The city was far away, but its lights and what seemed to be noise attracted Jack. The dark blue ink sky was strewn with stars, which at times obscured clouds pouring rain. Jack was completely wet, but he was pushing forward. He began to pick up speed and stopped for a moment. Looking around, he suddenly saw that there was no one around.
Trying to overcome the hallucinations, Jack began to read prayers, and they probably helped him.
After a while, he will reach the city.
XXI.
Walking along the main road, which was illuminated by more and more lanterns, Jack reached the main entrance to the city. He did not feel his legs, and all his thoughts could hardly be called pleasant. There was a field and darkness on both left and right of him, and therefore he only walked forward
The city at night was very beautiful. The lilac sky was covered with clouds, illuminated by the last rays of the sun. The many lights of shops and casinos beckoned to him, smells from restaurants teased and excited Jack. But he did not feel that in this city someone would be glad to him. He, completely deprived of his strength from the road, could not help but rejoice that he would soon find shelter for himself. He did not know what time it was, but judging by the fact that there were quite a lot of people on the street, he realized that this was only the beginning of nightlife. Jack decided to try to find a place to sleep. He was disgusted even to admit the thought that he would spend 3 nights in a row under the open sky.
Some of the locals were kind enough to sell him a tent for $ 40, but it didn't fit and he had no money at all. When the sunlight finally disappeared from the horizon, Jack decided to head to the bridge and spend the night under it. But there was no room, everything was occupied by cars. Plus, it was too light for him.
Jack decided to find a lodging for the night in the city church, in which, apparently, the evening service had long since ended.
The church was perhaps the only building in this city where one could hope for help. The gloomy Gothic building was sandwiched between the shops and the restaurant opposite, and was lit with many lights.
Jack, shaking himself from the road wash, and straightening his hair, knocked on the door of the church:
- Let me in for the night, - Jack said.
There was no sound outside the door, but soon he heard heavy footsteps.
- Let me in for the night, I can not sleep on the street - he repeated again.
The old pastor opened the door.
- Who is there? - he asked
- Jack.
- Who you are? I can help you? the pastor asked.
Jack began to talk about everything that had happened to him over the past few days.
A quarter of an hour later, he sank to the threshold of the church exhausted.
- So tell me what you want me to do? the pastor asked.
- Why don't you have a call to just ring the doorbell? Jack asked.
The pastor replied:
“Then just raise your hand. It will knock. - said the pastor.
Jack raised his hand on the advice of the pastor, and again began to knock on the door, but his knock was already completely exhausted.
Jack was a pitiful sight after hours of uninterrupted walking. And the pastor, taking pity, opened the door.
Jack entered the church.
He heard the pastor say:
- Jack, you've come a long way.
- You're right - Jack said.
- What do you want from me?
- I'm looking for shelter from the rain. My clothes are wet
- Well, why don't you stay with us then?
The pastor went somewhere in the dark, and a minute later brought bread and a piece of cheese that he offered Jack. He ate the treat with appetite, and lay down along the bench.
A moment later, something like a disjointed melody came from the church organ. Jack shivered, but the pastor laughed.
- Oh no, a student comes to us every night - he trains on the organ while no one is here.
