What does blitz help with?

Why are people interested in improvement in a game that was created for being an entertainment? I highly doubt that there are significant benefits in playing blitz, but it's still not too different from rapid and other time controls.

The adrenaline rush.

"Improvement" is a broad topic. Playing blitz chess improves my mental capacity and reflexes overall.

Yes it does actually: I won an OTB tournament because of a blitz playoff.

Playing blitz you will find yourself in time troubles more often and that experience can be helpful if you ever get in time trouble OTB even if time control is longer.

Actually this is a myth. Time trouble and blitz are completely different universes. Time trouble is about responding well to stress, blitz is about ignoring stress.

Blitz can help you prepare a new opening and get a feel for typical patterns that emerge in the early middle game. To the degree improvement in chess is grounded in understanding typical patterns and positions—which in itself is a debatable point—then blitz can help your game. However, the blitz must go hand and hand with serious opening study or you are just drilling bad habits and positions into your mind.

Also, my experience shows attractive women often are fascinated if you play blitz in a public venue and confuse you with an intelligent person.

Use faster time controls like bullet and blitz and rapid to drill in opening concepts, and ideas on how to handle early middle game.  Good prep for OTB play.  I used to get in lots of time trouble in OTB play.  This has cost me numerous tournaments over the years.  I didn't know my openings.  Took too much time to work my way through unfamiliar openings and didn't understand the middle game concepts that flow out of the openings.  Now in a fast bullet game if I see something I haven't seen below, I will analysis and figure out how to handle it for next time.

Blitz + more blitz = no improvement

Blitz + immediate deep analysis before another game = improvement

I do the analysis at www.chesspractice.com as the analysis is easier to understand.

In this Dan Heisman video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCY30KZxPew he explains the benefits of playing speed chess. Playing slow chess is even more important for becoming a stronger player, but there are certainly benefits to playing speed chess including blitz.

Helps you with bragging rights and shows people how fast you are. Also great for developing poor habits in longer time controls. Also gives you that much needed adrenaline fix.

Definitely forces you to calculate and make decisions faster.

I notice when I play a few Blitz games and go back to Rapid I typically have big time leads against my opponents.
