Hello chess.com, my name is Danny and I will be your spokesman for the evening. Some people have many different reasons for why they play chess. Some play for the fun of it, some play chess for the rush and the pressure of the moment. Some play it professionally. What does chess mean to you? Give me your thoughts.

AncientDragonLord

That is the initial definition of chess yes :D, but what does it personally mean to you if you don't mind sharing?

Interesting... under that definition some variants such as 960 would fall under the definition of "chess" (and maybe also Omega chess and Capablanca depending on the definition of "checkerboard.") However, other variants, such as bughouse and Loser's chess wouldn't.

flow

AncientDragonLord

The flow in a game of chess is important just as understanding how to stay calm in the flow of chess is also important. As for chess 960, although I do play it I don't feel it is really a type of chess game. Now, don't bite my head off or anything. I am saying it as a personal opinion. I respect all of your opinions and I won't argue with anyone. Just stating my own opinion is all.

patterns

AncientDragonLord

Ah yes brother dragon xydron, two sides of one. Yin and Yang, push and pull. Find the inner peace within yourself as you play the game and live the life of the Fire of the battle. :)

Patterns are also an important  aspect of the game of chess. You can learn many positional traps and strategies from patterns.
