What does "CLUTCH" even mean?

I thought CLUTCH was in Baseball
I’ve heard of “clutching” when your in a bad position and clutching for something other then a loss. At least that’s how a chess book I read explained it.

because when not fully engaged it would burn it up/wear it down. needed to be fully engaged or not fully engaged.
u know what the thrust bearing does? i changed the clutch a few times for old VW's.
