Just like all the other titles certain criteria must be met. WC just happens to have the rarest, the highest, and the most stringent of criteria.

Recently when Carlsen did not defend his, um, situation, how was that phrased? Did people say Carlsen did not defend his situation, did not defend his trophy, did not defend his achievement?

Or did they say he did not defend his title?
