Sorry to be so new.  I'm wondering what the numbers mean by a name.  I know higher number mean higher or better player.

In class, I know 90-100% A, 80-90% B, and so on.

So here, what do numbers catagories are there?  I'm just past the "Horsie moves this way" stage, so sorry for questions!

That number is the person's rating. It depends not only on how many games you win, but on the ratings of the people you beat. Winning against someone with a higher rating than you will make your rating go up more.

For reference, a beginner is usually around 800, a solid player is 1600, and titled players are around 2400.

The higher up you get, the more angry you get for losing to someone with lesser numbers!  *agree me*

Some would argue that the rating does not mean much.  Just focus on learning and the rating will take care of itself.  I think the rating is a good indicator of improvement.  In addition, if you have a higher rating you will get to play against better players which will help you improve faster.  You will learn more losing to a good player than winning against a lesser player.

You can get a sense for where you stand relative to other players on chess.com by looking at your percentage rank.  That is the percentage of chess.com players who have a lower rating than you do.  You can also view players and it shows average ratings and a graph of rating distribution.  The average turn-based rating is in the high 1300's and the average live rating is in the high 1100's.

You also get a lot more information on ratings if you become a premium member.  You can see more detail of your own rating and for certain levels, you can see detail of the rating of others.
