I don't have an exact definiton either but obviously someone who plays open positions rich with tactical possibilities is a more dynamic player than someone who prefers closed positions and slowly squeezing his opponent with positional play.
What does "dynamic" mean?
Dynamic compensation is usually about activity and tempi. If you move pieces up the board and generate a lot of threats but am willing to accept doubled isolated pawns then you have dynamic compensation for the structural weakness.
relative degree of change of location of the pieces from start to finish of a game. some pieces never leave their original square...that's lack of development. you see various structures form and change, though. for how many moves do they last? well we only move one piece at a time, so some things change, but some things stay the same. that's my take on dynamism.
Dynamics always have to do with change. In music, dynamics refer to changes of volume and intensity levels. In chess, a dynamic move is one that has the potential to change things. A dynamic advantage is one that is not static or permanent. It could change (by going away!).
"Dynamics" is something temporary and may change, as opposed to "statics" which means something permanent or fixed. In the context of chess, those are the two primary "imbalances" as IM Silman puts it.
i.e. - Having the initiative or lead in development are dynamic imbalances. Piece activity is also a dynamic imbalance. Being down on material on other hand is static one, in the event that the rest of the game is played perfectly from both sides, and all else being equal.
here is a good example of dynamic play for both side

i dont think dynamic is really a playing style.
kasparov is consistently described as a dynamic player
Dynamic is generally refered to maintaining energy and often subject to change. Basically the opposite of static. It's possible this just means that the player is likely to switch from a defensive to offensive mindset at any given point.
It's also often said that factors such as material and space are static concepts, while factors such as innitiative and development advatage are dynamic.
I've seen the word used to describe the way a chess player might play, but I don't know what it means.
Can anyone tell me?
