By now it should be obvious to you that he let you win...

What, kinda like a reversal of the beginning of "Searching For Bobby Fischer"? Wink

I think we all had that one thing that we saw in chess that was so fun, that kept us coming back. Otherwise who'd play this torture machine called "chess".

But I'd like to know what you first saw in chess that made it attractive.

Checkmate. That's all I need to know about chess.

Capablanca apparently never figured that out ....

When very young remember looking over this game from a book and thinking...
Wow! He's leaving all these pieces about to be captured, has less material himself, yet is still winning!!

Something about the game was irresistible to me/my brain. The logical and spacial thinking but most of all the complexity and creative element of it. I saw an opportunity for a creative outlet and each game does feel like a creation. (Probably in the beginning more so than now that I'm stronger and have to act more in function of the position.)

Also back in the day (I'm 32) when I was a really young kid Kasparov would often be on tv and that was somehow mystical and left a big impression. Later on I wanted to look just like Kasparov and I think I pulled it off atleast with the eyebrows.

No, he actually got beaten :D

he knows how to move the pieces, but his play were "good" for me long time ago. After I consistently beat him, then I got "trashed" when I play someone else (which is probably in a different class than me and my father's level, and they are probably around 1100-1300 class)
